Dorothy Margaret Perry was the only child of Doris (Starkey) Perry (Isle of Man), and Elijah
Perry (Liverpool, England). Elijah came to the United States in January of 1922 through Ellis
Island, followed by his young bride in 1923. Dorothy was born in Los Angeles, CA on
Thanksgiving Day, November 25, 1927. This event did not stop her mother from preparing an
entire Thanksgiving dinner before giving birth at home!
The Perry family chose California as their home but moved around a bit living in Santa Monica,
Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, and then finally settling down in Rancho Cucamonga.
On February 19, 1945, Dorothy married Harry (Lucky) Lanham and together they had two
daughters, Diana and Carol. Dorothy and Harry divorced after a few years.
Dorothy loved working at her mother’s restaurant Dolly’s Cafe in Rancho Cucamonga and this is
where she met Rupert Dishman. The couple married June 21, 1956. Together they had a
daughter, Karen.
The family enjoyed camping and made a point to visit various campgrounds across the US and
Canada, and they also spent time with Rupert’s extended family in Washington state. Dorothy
enjoyed her work as a mother and housewife. She was very involved with her children’s school
and extracurricular activities. She was an expert seamstress, sewing clothes for her daughters
and sometimes even their friends. She was the one to go to when you needed a prom dress or
something tailored.
Most of all, Dorothy loved spending time with her family and friends and made this a big priority
in her life. She was also well known as someone who would lend a helping hand to anyone in
need. Her home was a refuge for so many people over the years and she relished in sharing
whatever she had to give. She often took in kids who did not have a place to live. The spare
bedroom was always full and there were always a few extra folding chairs for her Thanksgiving
table due to her welcoming and accepting spirit.
Dorothy is remembered most for her loving spirit, her adoration of her grandkids, her crocheted
blankets, and the unconditional love she had for family and friends.
Dorothy passed away at the age of 95 having lived a long, fulfilling, and productive life. She was
surrounded by her loved ones at her death. Dorothy is predeceased by her husband Rupert
Dishman. She is survived by her daughters Diana King of Corona, CA; Carol Coleman of
Upland, CA; and Karen Davis of Claremont, CA; her nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren,
and six great-great-grandchildren.
She is loved and missed.
