It is with sadness that our family announces that our Mother, Fern Evelyn Stiefel Bailey passed away peacefully at Ivy Park in Rancho Cucamonga. Born 100 years ago in Kansas, Fern spent most of her life in southern California. She married Raymond Claude Bailey in 1943. Fern was well known in the community during her more than twenty years as cafeteria and snack bar manager at Upland High School, then Food Services Director for the five high schools in the Chaffey High School District. She was also a long-time member of the Upland Brethren in Christ Church and served as a founder of the Upland Manor.
After their retirement, Fern and Ray moved to Hesperia; after Ray passed away in 1989, Fern moved to Jess Ranch in Apple Valley for eighteen years, then to Upland Manor. In 2023 she moved to Ivy Park in Rancho Cucamonga where she was so well cared for in her last days.
Fern was also known for being a loving helper to her extended family and for her love of travel, having visited all fifty states and several Canadian provinces. She always loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Many will remember enjoying her famous cinnamon rolls, benefitting from her wise advice, and listening to her stories from her childhood. Proverbs 31:31 best expresses our love for her. “Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.”
Fern was pre-deceased by her parents, her brother and two sisters, and her husband, Ray. She is survived by her daughters, Vivian (Richard) Pengelly and Lucille (Mark) Charlton, and her son, Ray L. Bailey. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery.
