

Fred Albert Gattas, M.D. (b. October 18, 1922) of Upland, California passed away on Sunday, June 16, 2024. He was born in Chicago, Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois, College of Medicine with a B.S. degree in Science in 1943, and an M.D. degree in September, 1945. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps as a Captain last serving in Eritrea, East Africa. Fred had a rotating internship and residency in Internal Medicine at St. Francis Hospital in Evanston, Illinois and Hines VA Hospital in Hines, Illinois. On October 22, 1955 he married his beautiful bride, Mary Louise (née Meyer), in Dubuque, Iowa, moved to Ontario, California and started his office practice in Ontario from 1956-1967, and in Upland from 1967 to January, 1988.
In 1967 he became President of the San Bernardino County Heart Association and served as President of the San Bernardino County Medical Society from July, 1978-June, 1979. Fred was also on the Board of Directors for the California Society of Internal Medicine from 1976-1980 and was appointed to the Board of the Southern California Physician's Council in 1975 and became its President in 1978.
From 1976-1979 Fred was a Board of Trustees member of the Blood Bank of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. In 1980 he became President of the California Society of Internal Medicine and was a member of the American College of Physicians. In 1990 received the Outstanding Physician Award in San Bernardino County.
Fred enjoyed being a volunteer member of the San Bernardino County Citizens Patrol from 1997-2007. He was also a member of the University Club of Claremont from 1991 and served as President from 2008-2009. Fred sat on the Board of Directors for the San Antonio Water Company from 2002-2012, and served as Vice President in 2009.
Fred had a ham radio license, enjoyed sailing and loved to work in his workshop, usually doing his own repairs and even building a barn on his property. He shared a love of golf with his wife and was an active member of the Red Hill Country Club since joining in 1979.
Fred is survived by his wife, Mary, four children, Janet, Jeanine, Robert (and his wife Sharon) and Chrissy, granddaughter Brenda and is preceded in death by his grandson Brian. Per his request there will be no services.
