Janis Showalter Crowe, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother (GiGi), sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully in Alta Loma, California, on the early morning of June 19th, surrounded by her loving family. She was 96.
Born on March 22, 1929, in Elwood City, Pennsylvania, Janis was one of seven children. She outlived all but her beloved youngest sister, Grace Hoyland-Wallace. Janis graduated from New Castle High School in 1947.
Janis married William D. Showalter on June 17, 1949, and together they built a family. Moving to California in 1961, Janis devoted herself to raising her four children who adored her deeply. A lifelong lover of reading, Janis also had a wonderful sense of humor that delighted those around her. Inside and outside of the home, she was efficient, organized, cheerful and thoughtful. She never missed sending a card for her many loved-ones birthdays. She never complained and faced life’s challenges with strength, resilience and grace.
Janis served as the Registrar at Alta Loma High School for 28 years, beginning in 1972, where she was known for her dedication, efficiency, and her constant smile. She was respected and loved by the staff and students she served.
Later in life, Janis found love again with William “Bill” Crowe. They shared 12 joyful years together before his passing.
Janis is survived by her four children—Teri (Showalter) Baker, Tammy (Showalter) Arlen, William (Billy) Showalter and wife Charlene Showalter, and Joy (Showalter) Allen and husband Todd Allen. Janis had 13 beloved grandchildren: Katy Basten, Lindsey Gillis, Heidi DeWitt; Charissa Garlow, Tim C. Arlen, Faith Meyer, Jesse Arlen, Chrissy Taylor; Laif Showalter, Lily Showalter; Brittany Kennedy, and Corey Allen. She was preceded in death by her beloved granddaughter Tenny Arlen. Janis also had 22 great-grandchildren (and counting!) She was a devoted and generous grandmother and great-grandmother. Her legacy lives on in each of her descendants, and in the lives she quietly uplifted through her love, humor, and generosity.
Her life was a precious gift to all who knew her, and her spirit will be deeply missed.
A Funeral Service will be held on Friday August 29th, from 11:00 AM at Stone Funeral Home, 355 E. 9th St., Upland, CA 91786.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Dementia Society of America, in honor of Janis's memory.
