Joel Dominic Lamore, 58, of Upland, passed away at San Antonio Regional Hospital on Saturday, January 13, 2024. His unexpected death came after a planned cardiac procedure was followed by catastrophic complications. Joel was born to Joel J. Lamore and Andrée P. Lamore at March Air Force Base, in Riverside County, on December 4, 1965.
Joel was a respected and beloved Professor at San Bernardino Valley College for nearly 30 years, teaching a full range of English courses, including creative writing and British literature. He had also been a member of the Faculty Senate, chair of the Honors Program, and faculty sponsor of the student literary magazine Phineas and the Writers’ Block campus group.
He graduated with his Bachelor’s degree in English from Loyola Marymount University in 1988. He then earned dual Master’s and Master of Fine Arts degrees from Chapman University, graduating in 1991. In the early 1990s, before beginning his teaching profession at Valley College, Joel completed Ph.D. coursework and passed qualifying exams at Claremont Graduate University, where he met his wife, Kimberly Cortner.
Joel was a fine formalist poet and had had a number of works published in literary magazines, once being recognized in the Howard Nemerov Sonnet Contest for his poem “Frankensonnet.” In 1995, Joel founded the weekly poetry workshop of the Inland Empire Poets, which has run continuously, either in person in Riverside or online, since that time. Through the workshop, he has nurtured many published poets, and the group will continue, in his honor, under new leadership.
Joel was predeceased by his parents but is survived by his loving wife of 25 years, Kimberly Lynne Cortner of Upland; his sister and brother-in-law, Monique and James Moraga; twin nephews, Christopher and Diego Moraga; best friends from childhood, Craig Redelsperger and Dan Dunderman, both of Riverside. Many beloved friends and the colleagues, students, and graduates of San Bernardino Valley College will all mourn his passing.
