Leona Wilhelmina Briscoe Murphy was born on February 3, 1919 in Wellston, Oklahoma. She grew up there with two sisters, Wilma and Juanita, and her parents, John and Ida Briscoe. In 1937 she married Orbun Oren Murphy. They drove that same day to Cucamonga, California and began their married lives. They had three children, Loretta Jean, Everett Leroy, and Sharon Ann. They built a home, worked hard, and raised their children in Cucamonga. Leona worked as an aide in a rest home and as the assistant manager for the Cucamonga School District cafeteria for 25 years. Leona loved to bowl and play cards. She was an active member of the Eleventh Street Baptist Church for sixty years and especially enjoyed the annual Sunday School Christmas Party. But the thing she loved the most was being with her family. She had seven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and seven great, great grandchildren. She loved each and every one. She was the linchpin of the family and will be missed tremendously. Leona, our mother and grandmother, will be remembered for as long of any of us are alive.
