Nicholas Hurey, 94, of Rancho Cucamonga, passed
away on Monday, August 9, due to complications
from pneumonia.
Nick was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on December 14,
1926. He was the fifth of six children. He
graduated high school in February, 1945, and was
drafted into the US Army in March, 1945.
Nick spent 21 years in the Army working in
Intelligence. He was stationed in Korea, France,
Italy, Germany, Korea, Japan, England, India, Thailand, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Laos. While
stationed in Pakistan, he met Doreen Cunningham. After a four-year engagement, during
which he was stationed in other parts of the world, they eventually married in England then
moved to Germany. Nick retired from the Army in 1966. After the Army, Nick went to work for
the US Post Office delivering mail in Upland for 22 years. He retired from the post office in
1988.
During retirement, Nick and Doreen traveled to such places as Australia, New Zealand, and
Canada; and took cruises to Alaska, through the Panama Canal, and down the Danube River.
Nick donated blood religiously. He donated over 10 gallons until they eventually told him to
stop when he was in his seventies. Nick volunteered as a Traveler’s Aid at the Ontario Airport,
working every Tuesday morning for well over a decade. Nick was active with the Masons as
well as his church, St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Upland.
After 55 years of marriage, Doreen Hurey passed in 2016 due to complication from Parkinson’s
Disease.
Nick was healthy and active right up until the end. He continued to walk about a mile a day.
He lived in an assisted living home and was very proud of the fact the he always took the stairs
rather than the elevator. He was sharp as a tack and his biggest complaint was that he “was
surrounded by old people.”
Nick is survived by his son, Michael Hurey; daughter, JoJo Caprini, daughter-in-law; Sharon
Tyler; son-in-law Mike Caprini; granddaughter, Alexis Hurey; and grandsons, Hank Caprini,
Louis Caprini, and Jacob Tyler.
