He is survived by his wife Zaddel of 61 years, his four children, Gary (Linda), Greg (Karen) Gisele, Michelle (Ryan); his five grandchildren Danielle, Declan, Conor, Carrick, Sloan; siblings Dolores and Wilmot; sister-in- law Barbara; first cousins, Glenda and Janette; nieces Debra, Jacinta, Marie-Daphne; nephews, Desmond, Suran, Louis Robert.
He was preceded in death by his brother Angus, brother- in- law Illian, sister- in- law Hyacynth and nephew Deryck. He was brother-in-law to the A.C. Goberdhan family of Trinidad, also preceded in death: Francis, Ingram, Carol, Letitia, Lincoln and Anthony.
In 1939 he attended Naparima College (high school) in San Fernando, Trinidad and received a first grade Cambridge School certificate in 1944. Afterwards, in 1945, he attended St. Mary’s College (high school) where he took special courses in biology, chemistry and physics. Upon completion at St. Mary’s, he worked briefly at his mother’s restaurant business,Tackoor’s Restaurant.
At the age of seventeen after the passing of his father, he left Trinidad and entered McGill University where he graduated with his Bachelor of Arts with Distinction in the General Course. He went on to attend the University of Toronto where he received the degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1955.
Upon completing his one year rotating internship at the Allied Hospitals of the Sisters of Charity in Buffalo, New York, he returned to his island home in 1956 and contributed his medical knowledge and skills in healing the sick. After serving two locum tenens, he served as a full time Medical Officer with the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. He worked at the Port of Spain General Hospital, and later, at the San Fernando General Hospital. Both of these hospitals were owned by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago. Most of his medical duties at that time were confined to general surgery or emergency room work. From 1958 to 1963 he was in private General Practice in San Fernando, Trinidad. He also served as Secretary of the Trinidad and Tobago branch of the British Medical Association and was a member of the Medical Council of the Medical Board of Trinidad and Tobago.
In 1963, he returned to the United States where he served as an Assistant Resident in General Surgery at Memorial Hospital in Worcester, Massachusetts. He then continued his hospital training as a resident in Urology at Hennepin County General Hospital in Minneapolis, Minnesota and as a Fellow in Urology at the University of Minnesota.
On December 14, 1967, Dr. Tackoor was invited by Raymond M. Kay, M.D. and Alvin Sanborn, M.D to join the Southern California Permanente Medical Group (SCPMG). He served as the Chief of Urology at Kaiser Foundation Hospital, Fontana, and was also the SCPMG Regional Coordinating Chief of Urology.
Dr. Tackoor held an academic appointment at Loma Linda University as Professor of Clinical Urology. He was a member of the San Bernardino County Medical Society, the Western Section of the American Urological Association (WSAUA) and the American Urological Association (AUA).
Dr. Tackoor retired from SCPMG 26 years later in 1993. Upon his retirement he was the President of the Fontana Retired Doctors Association.
In 1999, as a result of his outstanding contribution to Urology, the Trinidad and Tobago Urological Association conferred upon him an honorary membership. In 2002 Dr. Tackoor was recognized by the Citizens and Friends of Trinidad and Tobago for his “outstanding performance in all aspects of the medical speciality of Urology.” His “insight, skill and concern for the health of the people of California set new standards for the medical profession.”
When not practicing medicine, he enjoyed golfing, horse racing, theater, movies, photography, traveling, professional baseball games, swimming in his pool and relaxing with his family. He was an avid reader of books and read the daily newspaper cover to cover. He was a long standing member of Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church, Upland, and was proud to serve on the Vestry.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday December 15, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church located at 330 East 16th Street, Upland, California, 91784.
