

Melba Jean Hurd, 89, of Dyer, passed away Friday, February 21, 2025 in Fort Smith. She was born January 14, 1936 in Ozark to the late Oddie and Iva Jean (Dawson) Dickerson. She had worked at GNB Battery, and had been a member of the Dyer Baptist Church since 1967.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Hurd; a daughter, Sheilla Smith; a son-in-law, Larry Smith; and a sister-in-law, Lee Dickerson.
She is survived by a daughter, Alta Wilson and husband Z.C. of Fort Smith; two brothers, Johnnie Dickerson and wife Bertha, and Charles Dickerson, all of Mulberry; grandchildren, James Hamilton (Tracey) of Dallas, and Lynnetta Penson (Travis) of Fayetteville; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Dillon, and Nathan Hamilton, all of Dallas, and Paige and Presley Penson, both of Fayetteville; and many nieces and nephews that were like children to her.
Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 26, 2025 at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Dyer Cemetery, under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren, AR.
The family will visit with friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home, 4100 Alma Highway, Van Buren, AR.
