Zane Wolford Wherry, 85, of Rudy, entered into rest Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at his home. He was born May 9, 1935 in Johnstown, PA to William Franklin and Elsie Twigg Wherry. Zane enlisted in the United States Navy as a young man and retired in 1975 as a Petty Officer First Class after serving for 21 years. It is during this time that he met and married his wife of 54 years and raised a family of five sons. In his active years aside from his career, Zane could often be found involved in scouting, camping, fishing and baseball with the boys and on bowling leagues with Mae. Upon retirement, Zane moved his family to St. Ignace, Ml for a few years before relocating to Rudy. In his retirement, he loved to spend time hunting, playing cards into the wee hours, joking, telling stories and spending time with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mae; two sisters, Dorothy Marty and husband Joe, and Malvern Gilberg and husband Bob; three brothers, Clarence and wife Thelma, Dennis and wife Janet, and infant brother, Patrick; and brother-in-law, Kenneth C. Haller.
Zane is survived by five sons, William of Rudy, Craig and wife Jackie of Dighton, KS, Dale of Van Buren, Chris and wife Lois of Rudy, and Michael and wife Stephanie of Van Buren; a sister, Edith Haller of Fayetteville; fifteen grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren, as well as a number of nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
Funeral service will be 12:00 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2021 at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at the Fort Smith National Cemetery, under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren, AR.
Pallbearers will be William Wherry, Craig Wherry, Dale Wherry, Chris Wherry, Tom Renaud, and Michael Haller.
Viewing will be from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home, 4100 Alma Highway, Van Buren, AR.
