I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear about Mr Baillie’s passing. I took art with him during my time at Killarney, and he was always such a positive spirit. My mother used to bump into him quite a lot at local markets, and she would always come back telling me about how great he was in each encounter. He was truly a great man and it was my pleasure to have been taught by him. His influence will not be forgotten and he will be greatly missed. 

I loved working with Alex for my years at Killarney. As a new teacher I was asked to teach art two different times (because I was flexible and loved art). Alex spent so much of his own time helping me and guiding me and making me laugh. So passionate about art and teaching and making positive connections with students.

After I changed schools, I still bumped into him countless times as we lived in the same area. On his bike, at the pool, at the grocery store, always an infectious smile on his face and quick to ask me how I was. We had many many fun chats over the years.

What a great guy and I'm so sad to hear this news.



I was one of Alexander's art students in grade 12 in the 2002/2003 school year at Killarney. I always looked forward to his classes and he would always compliment me on my art work. He was one of the funnier teachers as well. He was just a great person to be around and I feel so lucky that I got that opportunity. Even though I only had him for that one year, it still feels like losing a family member. He won't be forgotten. 

I am very grateful to have been Alex's student at Killarney years ago. He was a positive, passionate, thoughtful and caring person. He has had a positive impact on many of us as a teacher, mentor and friend. Two years ago, I was lucky to bump into him again. I was happy to hear of his retirement and how proud he was of his children and their successes. Even though we have not been in touch for many years, he was still the same warm, cheerful person. It's a testament to his character in that he builds a genuine relationship with everyone he meets. Thank you for touching our lives with your laughter, passion and love for life. We will miss you. Condolences to your family. May you rest in peace. 

My wife Monica and I were neighbours of Alex for some 15 years. We enjoyed talking with him, often when he was on his large balcony/patio enjoying the sun. He was happy to have me unleash my gardening skills on his back yard area and this was great fun. Last year, he knocked on our door to show us a wood carving of a rose that he was working on. Beautiful. We are truly saddened to lose Alex as a friend and neighbour. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family and friends.  RA

I remember lots of good times swimming at Nanaimo river and riding in the back of Alex’s old pick up truck. My condolences to his family. He will be missed. 


We are very sad to hear about Alex.  He was an amazing artist who generously shared his passion and love of art.  He tried to teach me (Jill) how to create his multi-level wooden panels but all it did was make me appreciate  his amazing talent even more.   He loved his students and welcomed everyone and anyone into Artland.  He also made the most amazing double chocolate chip cookies!  Ray would often have a good Alex story after the regular Friday afternoon boys gatherings.  His point of view was always unique and never shy!  He will be missed.  Rest in Peace. I only had the pleasure of knowing Alex for three short summers at fraserview golf course.  
He was always a joy to talk with, and was never too busy to share a moment or pass on knowledge of a good book or a nice place to eat. 
I cannot say enough about how much I looked forward to seeing him come in for his mixed beer.
I tried it the other day half pale ale half honey lager.. it was delicious.

Very shocked & saddened to hear the news of Alex’s passing. 
Alex was a regular of mine @ Fraserview Golf course. I looked forward to seeing him every shift after he would cruise down to the course on his bicycle , his special mixer of beer would always be on standby, sometimes he would bring us girls delicious pastries from his favourite dessert shops in town. He always had a radiant smile on his face & would always be asking us if there was a way he could help us whether it was helping us move patio tables or chairs or to just lend an ear when we needed to vent. I will miss seeing him on the patio with his feet perched up near the flower beds and his face buried in whatever good book he was reading that week. On rainy days when the course was slow he would sit and chat with me, about life & art & would show me some of the amazing art pieces he was finishing for friends. 
Alex, your fraserview family will be missing you deeply this summer and in the years ahead.  Your kindness, generosity and  humour was one in a million. I am glad I got to chat with you one last time a couple weeks ago although my heart feels heavy knowing that I will not get to see you this year or on days when I need a friend to listen or a silly joke to make me laugh. 
If there is any information on where we can send a donation or flowers for his family in Alex’s name can this please be posted on here, I know many of the staff at Fraserview are wanting to pay or respects to an amazing customer & friend.

I was saddened to hear of Alex's passing; however, it also allowed me to reflect on many great memories of my time working with him. I've spent nearly my entire teaching career with Alex. We both went through the teacher education program together and were student teachers at the same school. Alex and I were fortunate to get teaching positions at Killarney in the early 90s. I will never forget his sense of humour and generousity. He will always be the founder of "Artland," the original "Velcro Boy," and Mr. "Outstanding." 
I will miss you Alex.

Alex Baillie (aka The Commander). I knew him well. We were both teachers at Killarney. We spent a great deal of time together. We went on various “Missions,” as he used to call them – to the golf course, the “Klub,” Reid’s deck, WW II air shows, art shows, baseball games in Seattle and way too many restaurants and pubs to list - such good times and so much fun.

I think these photos say enough. If you don’t understand the context, you just didn’t just didn’t know Alex. He will be forever missed.

Alex will be forever remembered as an artist, teacher, friend and mentor for so many.  His positivity and optimism for great achievement will always be remembered.  The lobby of the Vancouver School Board is a magnificent tribute to his creativity.

I was a regular at Fraserview GC would meet Alex there on a weekly basis  On rainy days he would be in the Clubhouse front table or sunnier on the deck feet up with his usual read  I was with him on the deck with a pint April 12th  My partner Mercedes was a colleague at Killarney being both artist  He always spoke eloquently
about her art   Alex & I shared the same attitudes

This message is from a couple of Alex's friends from Nanaimo. 
Our "Buddy" Alex ... or better known as "Axle" will be deeply missed, we are saddened to hear of his passing.  We grew up together and went to John Barsby  and NDSS. One of our fondest memories was our trip to Europe in October 1971, we travelled all over Europe for 3 months. Axle was an avid soccer player and a huge "Red Devils" fan so we were able to see Manchester United and Coventry play, Bobby Charlton scored the winning goal on a pass from George Best ... Axle was in his glory!!! This is a photo of us at the Kings Head Pub in Bedworth, England and we're just helping ourselves as usual.  Our deepest condolences to all of the family, our friend will be truly missed.

I first met Alex when he was still at TOC for the VSB. He subbed in the Library at Prince of Wales for quite  few days.  In his down time, we took advantage of his artistic ability and he made a number of posters for us to help us with our displays! They were used many times. When I moved to Killarney, Alex was there. We had  a great art collection and Alex and Neil Prinsen made sure we continued to add to it regularly so their students could be exposed to all types of art. RIP, Alex.

Condolences to Alex's family , I was honored to have Alex as a friend. He will be truly miss at Fraserview Clubhouse. Alex stopped in everyday like clockwork to sit and read his book and have his special made draft. 
Alex was more than a customer he was a friend and I will miss our talks, his life advice and stories. Rest in piece my friend. 

My prayers are with the family during this difficult time.  Alex was part of the Performing and Fine Arts department at Killarney and I had the honour to work with him for many years.  His passion for the arts was contagious.  I remember his big laugh and love for life.  I will cherish the time we shared together at Killarney.  May the family find strength with the memories they had with Alex.  Rest in peace. 

I was very fortunate to be taught by Mr. Baillie. No matter what, every time I saw him he would have a smile on his face. My last two years I was lucky enough to have him in art, and be his service student. My graduating year of highschool Mr. Baillie awarded me with an art scholarship that I will forever be grateful for. My condolences go out to his family and loved ones. Rest in piece to a true one of a kind great guy.

I am so sorry for your loss, my thoughts are with you. I worked with Alex at Killarney Secondary.  A student who was very good in art, could not afford to buy a prom ticket. She told me that Mr. Baille paid for her ticket.  When I asked him about that, he did not want anyone to know. All he said was "she is such a great student, that I just wanted to help her out" That is my favourite memory of Alex.
