Even you lived far (Canada) from us (Viga)for a longer time, your thoughts and deeds are much closer than your physical presence. These have been more decorated during the last stage of your life on Earth when we constantly communicate. Giving us unique words of advice.

Hi uncle Arnold, J4ce (Jomar, Janelle, John and Justin), Noel and I are so grateful and blessed to have you in our lives.  The short time you lived with us, my children experienced what it's like to have a Lolo.  Family game nights  like monopoly and chess,  watching and cheering to my children's sports and performances, family outings and our simple chats especially regarding your childhood with Mama are the one's I cherish the most.  
We could never forget your last Christmas Day with us.  When Nurse Amanda came to check on you, you're so positive about everything.  You were so proud of introducing me and my children, of how proud you were of their achievements, and how I'm raising them.  When Janelle sang for you, you held Christine's hand and won't let go.  You showed us how much you loved your family, especially you're children.  
Thank you uncle Arnold for everything.  You'll be forever in our thoughts and our hearts.  Until we meet again....

Everyday you greet us in the morning, the smile you show me is so youthful, you're kind and put others before yourself, you were always there when we needed you the most, all the fun we had playing monopoly and chess, we could never beat you, you were always the best, I hope that every coffee I gave you was always so sweet, and that in our house it was comfy to take a seat. Now I may never see you, we are apart, but I want you to know you are in my heart.

The first time I met you was when me and my sister came to Canada in the fall of 1989. The Ocol brothers have helped each other to have auntie Zeny and uncle Arnold family to sponsor me and my sister Liza , we became an instant Kuya and ate to the three loving kids you have . We stayed with your family until I finished highschool before graduating we came along on west coast road trip vacation visiting a few places and relatives along the way. 
First stop was Seattle where we meet the De Guzman family (Lola Mameng) and auntie Zeny's family. Then off to Portland Oregon to visit the Grotto camping for few nights nearby while you try your luck at Greyhound race, while the kids stayed in the campsite to enjoy camping and swimming. Then you drove along the coast of Oregon towards San Francisco to visit Golden Gate Bridge and more relatives over at SF saw Bay Bridge( double deck bridge ) before it collapsed on the last major earthquake .
Then off to Las Vegas for few days stayed at Circus Circus watched the circus show at the basement of the casino. While staying there for a few days as a curious guy that I am, I pulled the lever on one of the slot machine on the hallway luckily a few coins dropped.that was one of my souvenirs of that trip.
The last stop before going home was Reno. Then back to Grotto again to say a prayer befor going home . What an awesome and eventful trips that was

If we have not say it before ,I'll say it now that we are so thankful for bringing us here in Canada.

Ruben Ocol Tongo

My memories with my brother Arnold can be summarized as brief and memorable.  It began when we were growing up, having orphaned from our mother at an early age.  We were left at the guidance of our older sisters when our father remarried.  Although we were welcomed at our father's abode, it was a constant tug of war between our father and our siblings, which made us choose which way we go.  My brother Arnold, being 4 years old than me, always seemed to have a certain idea of what to do.  When we were in our teens, him and our older brother Roger, joined our 3rd oldest brother Gerardo in Manila and lived there for some time.  Eventually, i was left with our youngest brother, Joventino, to live on our own.  After finishing highschool I tried my luck in Manila. It is there where I noticed some extraordinary qualities in my brother.  He was working as a door-to-door salesman.  So, one day I said "I'll go with you and see if I can do the job."  Unexpectedly, I spent the whole day with only 2 sales.  But for him, he seemed to have no sweat at all.  Whenever he goes to a house, he'll close a sale.  He seemed to have that magnetic personality to make him an excellent salesman.  There came a time when I got frustrated in finding a good job that I decided to come to Canada.  I persuaded our brother Gerardo, who was already a Canadian citizen at that time to sponsor me.  After 3 years living here, I was able to convince him to sponsor Arnold too.  And so he came, the year was 1974.  He stayed with our brother Gerardo and family for a while, taking some odd jobs.  I was happy having him reunited with us.  We always helped each other out whenever the need calls for.  A time came when I needed advice on some of my problems. I went to him expecting for him to at least side with me, but instead, he'd just tell me to do what is right.  And that I was old enough to solve my own problems. Looking back, I sometimes attributed to what I am now.  From those words.  On my moments of loneliness.  I come to think that I could have spent more valuable time with my brother Arnold.  But life is not all that easy. We have to strive to survive.  
I will be missing you my brother.  I wish you eternal rest and hoping you're in good hands.  Until we meet again.  Good bye.

My family and myself had the great pleasure of sharing our passion for horses and horses racing . Arnold loved his horses and we would talk about his plans for them . It was a joy when he came to the farm in Armstrong to see his horses and watch the babies run and play . Always to most positive, kind and inspirational person , we will miss going to the races and visiting chatting about our families ( horse and human ) . Arnold was very proud of his children and insisted he treat us when his son's food truck was at the track  we all enjoy a delicious meal together !  I know Arnold's legacy will go on with the horses  and he will be watching over them ! We will miss him very much and are very honoured to have had him in our lives . Until we meet again .... I will always remember your never-ending smile and your love for family.  Family get-togethers at your place, particularly when we were younger, was something I always looked forward to, not only because of the fun we had, but also because of the love that you imparted not only to your three wonderful children but also to the rest of your family.  It is your big and generous heart coupled with your positivity and encouragement of everything we do that I will miss the most.  You will forever be in our thoughts and in our hearts.

Uncle Arnold, I'll always remember all the big hugs and how happy you were to have family get togethers when I was a kid. Your  hugs were contagious and one of the many wonderful things about you - caring, kind, proud father and uncle. Your warm energy will always be present and felt by all who love you. Miss you and love you, Uncle.

When we first  arrived in Vancouver, you were the first to visit us and welcomed us in your home.  Manay Zeny would oftentimes cook a delicious meal and you and Papa would spend a few hours reminiscing the past  and our family relations.  You were the one who first took Papa to PNE and the Hastings Race track.  I'm sure he told you about his horses back home years ago and that's why he looks forward  on weekends so he can join you at  the horse race. They where the highlight of Papa's days in Vancouver aside from watching his grandsons.  Thank you Manoy Arnold for the unconditional love you've shown us . You will be  missed.  Rest in peace!

We are glad to join the celebration of your life and the remembrance of the 40th day when you left his world for a better life in God's kingdom. We will always remember you for your pleasant and friendly disposition all the time and your positive attitude. We will continue to pray for the eternal repose of your soul in paradise.

Lolo Arnold, it's your grandniece, Janelle. I miss you so much and I think of you all the time. Back when you were living with us, I remember you would always wake up early to drive me to work. On the road, you'd ask me to play Justin Bieber or Britney Spears because you thought it was "cool music" kids listened nowadays haha. Lolo, you were so cool, selfless and oh so loving to me and our family. I will never forget you and I love you so much! Rest in peace Lolo.

Hi Lolo, I miss you very much. Without you I would never be where I am now. I am forever grateful for bringing my mother to this wonderful country and being the father that she needed. Even for a short period that you lived with us, you were the best grandfather to my siblings and I. Thank you for loving us dearly and sharing fun memories with us. Thank you for waking up on the call just to pick me up when I'm stranded and not telling my mom. Thank you for the competitive volleyball games and going down intense waterslides with us even when your bones ache. I will forever cherish all these special moments I had with you.

December 1st 2015, that was the last time that I saw you healthy and happy and able to walk off to the departure gates for your holiday with Kuya to the Philippines. I never thought that it would be the last time I got to see you like that.
February 29th 2016, you had the stroke in the Philippines and you finally were able to fly home on March 29th to stay with mom.  The stroke left your right limbs paralyzed.  We just thought it was just the stroke that you had to overcome, but then months down the road you complained about your eyes and the double vision. We thought it was just a cataract that was the problem... but little did we know it was much more serious than that.  The day after your 74th birthday, you were admitted into VGH.  And on December 29th, we received news we never wanted to hear it was brain cancer that was holding you back.  
Then on the morning of February 7th, I woke up to go home from the hospital to get ready for work. I hear the 2 nurses in the room with Jr there.  One of them said they could smell a strong sweet smelling scent, like that of the Sampaguita, the national flower of the Philippines.  I thought nothing of it and collected my things before I leave.  But everytime before I leave you, I always made sure I told you how much I loved you, how strong you were and how proud I am of you .. and that I will see you later after work.  But that morning, on February 7th,  you left me with your last 2 breaths.  You kept your promise to me Dad, I asked you to promise that if you were to leave us, that I wanted to be with you.  That memory will last foreverI finally accepted that the scent of the flowers were his Angels guiding him on his path to Heaven.
Dad, you were never a burden to us.  You gave us so much in life and it was our time to give back.  You hung in there.  You fought this battle with cancer with all your might, no matter what the odds were. You proved to me and everyone how strong you were.  I already knew you were the strongest man ever, of course I did, you were my dad.  I want everyone here to know dad, how proud I am of you.  I love you with all I have in me.  You are my everything, you are my hero, you are my first love.  I know you will be with me forever.. Dad, until we meet again. Love.. your daughter.

Arnaldo turreda Ocol born on Dec 19,1942. Husband to zeny. Father to Dennis Christine and Jr. He is my hero, my role model, and my dad. 

It was around this time last year my father and I decided to make an impulse vacation to the Philippines. During which we had lots of time to bond with each other. Him telling me stories and showing me places of his childhood. Meeting our families and traveling to different parts in the Philippines we never been to before. It was a chance to be free and live in the moment. It was a expensive YOLO moment. Which was worth every penny. Invaluable memories I will cherish for the rest of my life. 

Throughout my life I hav been very blessed. It's interesting how this journey has been guiding me thru life. I planned a four month vacation for my dad and I was only going to stay for a month. For some reason, I wanted to stay longer. I felt the comfort of being part of a family. Especially, finding out how big our family is. I notice how popular my dad was over there. I kept telling everyone here how my dad is the rockstar of the family. He knew everyone that was related to us. Right down to the great nieces and great nephews. Everyone loved him and called him Lolo. He was like the family tree. He would explain to me how each person was related to me. And he also helped me ground my roots in the Philippines. Little did I know it was gonna be our last vacation together. It was like an angel was preparing something that was later to come. 

As most of you know, my father ended up getting a stroke during our trip. The road to recovery was long and slow with no progress. During that time my dad moved back to my mom's place where she took care of him. Ever since, we started to become a whole family again. Like everything was coming full circle. Within that same year, my dad ended up being admitted to the hospital a day after his bday. He was later diagnosed with brain cancer. It was the kind of illness that was not operable and it was terminal. They said he maybe hav three months to live. Turns out it was only weeks. It was devastating to our family to hear something like this. For the entire seven weeks my dad was in the hospital. I spent every day by his side. Observing his health and emotions. There were good days and bad days. I know he felt happy whenever close relatives came to visit. And I personally appreciate those who came to visit him as much as how my dad felt. 

I admire my dad for his strength and love for our family. He was courageous in facing death head on. I can't imagine what he was going thru as the illness progress. He fought with everything in him. But, God was calling him and he did not let my dad suffer. I know that there is a purpose to everything in life. A reason why things happen. That there is a bigger picture to everything life throws at us. I believe my dad held on as long as he did to show us the true meaning of life. And he was finally at peace knowing that everything is gonna be ok for us and that he not need to worry about us. 

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being my dad. You are my inspiration. I will miss you dearly. I will always be thinking of you through out my life. I love you dad forever.
