It is with great sadness that we advise of the passing of our dear elder Barbara Ann Charlie. Barbara was born in Stawmus IR No. 24, in Squamish to her mother Josephine (nee Antone) and father Dominic Charlie. She resided in Xwmélch’tstn, Capilano IR No. 5 and passed away peacefully with love of family by her side at Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver. Barb grew up in Xwmélch’tstn, Capilano IR No. 5 and attended West Vancouver Secondary School. Barb worked with many Indian/Aboriginal/Indigenous organization in BC. With colleagues she worked the North Shore Chapter of the BC Association of Non-Status Indians which later became the Urban Native Nations. One of her most notable accomplishments was addressing the injustices of how aboriginal women were treated in Canada and Bill C-31, a bill to amend the Indian act was passed in 1985. She worked with Battered Women & Shelters, Vancouver Native Housing, AIMS and so much more. In our community here at home Barb served 20 years on the Membership Committee and was also involved in our traditional and cultural practices. A true matriarch of Squamish Practices.
Barb is survived by her sister ‘Sally’ Sarah Louise Nahanee; children Ann-Louise Whonnock, James Joseph Kobierski; grandchildren Josephine Marie-Louise Whonnock (George), Jonathan Edwards, Mirriam Jeffrey (Brent), Joshua Jeffrey, Anastasia Jeffrey, Sarah Jeffrey, Mary Dana Kobierski, Tabitha Rose Kobierski; great grandchildren Kristen Jilliann Whonnock (Edward), Jordan Johnathan Whonnock,
Gavin Kendall Baker, Quintus Royce Lee Edwards, Lazarus Norman Karl-Heinz Derrick, Jude Gunter Tyler Hunter-Jeffrey, Jack Neil Jeffrey-Wesley; nephews Peter Charlie, Stephen “Tiny” Charlie, Rick Charlie,
Gilbert Joe (Betty), Reynold Joe, Anthony Nahanee, Matthew Ohman; niece Michelle Ohman; and special son Stelmexw Siiyay - Ian Tait.
We understand this is a difficult time for families and relatives and that many people would have liked to attend but at this time it is impossible due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
We will be hosting a ‘Celebration of Life’ later at which time we will finish our work with handshakes and traditional practices.
