
Barbara Lynne Mathias-Joe (nee: Newman), age 50, of North Vancouver, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 14, 2013 at Lions Gate Hospital in doctors care surrounded by family and friends. She was the beloved wife of Rocky Terry Mathias-Joe the love of her life for 21 years and was recently married on September 28, 2013.
Barb was born September 29, 1963 and was a very proud Squamish Nation member who grew up in North Vancouver on the Mission reserve and moved to Capilano reserve. She was the daughter of the late Edgar Oscar Newman. She is survived by her mother Suzanne Kathleen Newman (nee: Webb), sister Leanne Michelle Newman, brother Calvin Baker Sr. (Cheryl). Barb will be dearly missed by her son Andrew Robert Newman-Meredith & stepson Rocky Mathias-Joe II. She leaves behind her beloved uncle Chief Ronald Newman (Bonaro), aunts Valerie Newman (Dan Maxwell), Ruth Heintz, Janet Webb, and Shelia Brown. Brother in-law Cody Mathias (Bernadine), sister in-laws Aggie Paul (Maynard), Gertie August (Joe), Rose Seipp (George), Katie August, Mandy O’Donoghue (Phil), Frances Morton (Bob), Dulcie August (Louis) & Ellen Mathias-Joe (Ryan)
Barbara had countless friends that were lifelong friendships and she was an incredible person and loved spending time with family and always attended community events at Xwmélch’sten Park with her soul mate and pals enjoying the atmosphere of socializing with her friendly smile. Her favourite place was spending time at the Capilano River with her husband enjoying the outdoors creating memories and sharing stories. She also enjoyed baking and simply spending time with her friends and family.
A Prayer and Funeral Service will be taking place at the Chief Joe Mathias Centre, 100 Capilano Road, North Vancouver, BC on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 at 7:00 pm and Thursday, October, 17, 2013 at 10am. On line condolences may be sent to www.glenhavenfuneralchapel.com.
