August 30, 1982 – June 27, 2025
With deep sorrow and profound love, we announce the sudden and unexpected passing of Derek Stavem on Friday, June 27, 2025, following a cardiac arrest.
Derek was born in Vancouver and raised in Vernon, British Columbia, and brought joy, humour, and compassion into every space he entered. He was a beloved husband, a devoted and playful father, a cherished son and brother, and a steadfast friend to many. He leaves behind his loving wife, Tracy (née Lam), and their three young children—Linden (10), Mila (8), and Mackenzie (7)—who were the light of his life.
He is also survived by his mother, Kathy; his sister Nicole; Nicole’s children, Nathaniel and Kairi; and her fiancé, Kyle. Derek was predeceased by his father, Dave.
Derek had a larger-than-life presence that will be sorely missed. Recognizable by his trademark fiery red beard and unforgettable smile, he was known for his dad jokes, his deep love of board games, karaoke, and video games, and for connecting with people of all ages. Whether through laughter, creativity, or thoughtful conversation, Derek made others feel seen and valued.
Together, Derek and Tracy were active members of their church and school community at St. Paul’s in Richmond, always leading with kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith. Their home was a place of welcome for friends, neighbours, and anyone in need. Derek gave of himself without hesitation, and his legacy is one of love for his family.
Though his passing leaves an enormous void, the love Derek shared lives on in the hearts of everyone he touched.
