I knew Jane was remarkable from the very beginning of our psychiatric residency at UBC. She was incredibly bright, and combined that with a warm down-to-earth wisdom. Throughout her working life, she straddled the worlds of mother&wife, clinical care, academia, and teaching with humility and skill. She worked to improve mental health care for young people in the province. When advice was needed, Jane was available with practical counsel.

The world has lost a force for good through her loss. Rest well dear Jane. Thank you for being you. Sending love to your precious family.

It was a privilege to have worked and taught within the same psychiatric community as Jane; and to consider her to have been a colleague.
She will be sorely missed. May her family find comfort.

It was like yesterday when we were all young and having dreams. Jane's voice on stage in one of Bodwell's grad ceremonies and presence in many of the staff year-end parties are still vivid. I value so much the friendship. Jane's spirit is now free and her legacy will live forever. Bodwell will continue to offer the Will and Jane Garland Scholarship annually to one of the best students.

In the many years when Will taught and later became principal at Bodwell High School, Jane was a part of our school community. I remember when she first formally presented to our counsellors and faculty, she made specialized areas of psychology and medicine easy to understand, relevant and useful. On many occasions after a dragon boat race or watching the super bowl, we partied in the backyard of their house, or crowd in the small living room eating and drinking. We were always impressed that in a quiet way, Jane always brought rounds of food and drink to satisfy everyone. I have yet to meet someone like Jane so easy going, so generous in spirit, and so profoundly wise. She will be greatly missed.

Auntie Jane always had an aura of grace and calm around her, and I think that’s what I remember most. Though time together wasn’t always frequent because of distance, it was always of high quality and I reflect on it vividly and fondly. Constantly in awe of her endless love, we will miss her smile and warmth. We love you Auntie Jane, I’ll carry your name and memory proudly.

Knowing Jane was a great privilege and honour. She was a remarkable friend, a phenomenal person whose legacy will always be there for all to see, and one of the most caring and kind people you could hope to meet. She had a positive influence on everyone she met. Her beautiful and infectious spirit will be her legacy. My thoughts are with her family. Please accept my most heartfelt condolences. May she Rest in Peace!

I had the privilege and good fortune to work with and beside Jane and the marvellous team she created and lead for those 30 years. Along with the children and parents she helped we all loved and enjoyed her insightful kindness, her deep understanding of what it was to be human and how to tame the anxiety that confounds us all at some point in our lives. Jane’s playful way of finding magic in the world enabled her to connect and understand children so well and to help their parents embrace a more creative and constructive approach in their parenting.
My deepest condolences to Will and family.

I had the great pleasure of working with Jane in the Department of Psychiatry at Children’s Hospital over many years. She was kind, compassionate and at the same time a great psychiatrist, clinician, researcher. She touched the lives of so many patients and their families. My thoughts are with her family and loved ones.
