With profound sadness we announce the passing on June 28, 2020 of Mrs Bui Thi Gai (Hong), our loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and mother to many others for whom she had cared.
She left us peacefully after a sudden illness, completing a long life-journey of 90 years overflown with love and care.
Born in Truoi, Hue, Vietnam in 1930, daughter of a prominent political activist against French colonial rule, she witnessed incredible changes to her world. She lived through the Great Famine in 1944–1945 under the Japanese occupation. Under strict food rationing, she would sneak out to give her share to the starving destitutes on the streets.
She was married to her loving husband Ho Dac Co in 1947 while heavy fighting broke out in and around Hue. She lost her father, who died at the hand of the French colonial troops shortly after her marriage. Her husband barely escaped the same fate, and as a result the young couple fled to Saigon in 1949, after the first child was born.
She witnessed the chaos and instability after the fall of Saigon in 1975 and stood firmly during the traumatic years following the life-changing event. Despite being expropriated of a lifetime’s hard work, nobody could take away the core values and the blessings that she and her husband managed to pass on to the next generations.
In 1987, with her husband and her youngest daughter, she moved to Vancouver, joining her 4 children already living in Canada.
She was the beloved mother of 10 children, 24 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren.
She lived a fulfilling life as a wonderful mother and homemaker.
She devoted all her love and time to her family and people around her. Several grandchildren consider themselves abundantly blessed, because they have been lucky to spend a significant part of their childhood under her direct care. She passed away surrounded by her family as she had always been all her life.
She loved to cook for her family, until it was no longer physically possible. She so much loved her role as Bà Ngoại (Grandma from Mum’s side), Bà Nội (Grandma from Dad’s side) and mostly Great Grandma! She had a sweet, gracious and loving personality and made people around her feel special, loved and cared for, always.
She loved and looked after her husband’s family as her own. A brother (in his mid-eighties) of her late husband, every morning called her and reminded her many times of his respect for her: "Since I’ve lost my mum, I love you like my mum”. Another nephew wrote "I love you like my second mother".
Many friends of her children as well as children of her friends treated her as if she was their own mother. A trusted friend of her second daughter even declared ‘I am child number 3.5, slotted in among Mum's 10 children’!
Her kind and gentle heart was not confined to the family circle. Many people until this day feel indebted to her, because she and her husband gave them a saving hand when life was most fragile and hardest. Around the fall of Saigon, when life was in turmoil , she whole-heartedly provided shelter, food and even financial support to over 100 people who took refuge in her home for several weeks.
If we could only relive, even if just for a day, together with her in our home in Saigon to feel the wonderful family warmth and love – again.
She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts and in those who are privileged to have met her.
A celebration of Mother Bui’s life will be held at Dignity Memorial 5390 Fraser Street, Vancouver, on Wednesday, July 8, 2020, from noon to 1:30 pm.
