On behalf of Council, Band Manager & Member Support of Squamish Nation we extend our sincere condolences to the Hall/Johnston, Tom/Cordocedo families. It is with great sadness that we advise of the passing of our dear elder Harold ‘Howard’ Johnston on June 1, 2020 at Lions Gate Hospital. Howard was born in North Vancouver on April 1, 1932 to his parents Tommy ‘Toby’ & Isobel (nee Cordocedo) Johnston. Harold grew up on the beach in Xwmelch’tstn, Capilano IR No. 5 with his family and friends; he attended St. Paul’s Indian Residential School; and picked berries in Kent Wa. He loved to play cribbage and watch the Price is Right. Harold was a handyman, lived on a boat and even built and worked in a fish smoke house. He really enjoyed nature. Family also recalls his work in the 1973 television movie “I Heard the Owl Call My Name” he was comical and loved to make people laugh.
He is survived by his children Robert Wayne Campbell (Mary Jane), Donald Glenn Johnston, Clayton Alec Johnston, Kevin Alfred Johnston; and special son Darrin Brian Keetla and dear friend Betty Keetla; grandchildren Rebecca Lynn Duncan (Marsell), Chief Ian Campbell (Amanda), Donald Gilbert, Marlene Joyce & Robin Ann Grubb Johnson, Timothy Mingo Cambron, Tyee Cochise Cambron, Aliesha Blue Clay, Randy Chantelle & Victoria Johnson, Simone Sharon Sandra Samantha, Clayton Alfred Gilmour J., Shiniah RM Bird-Simard, Clifton Alec & Elizabeth Marlene Johnston, Shane Howard Johnston, Ashley Johnston, Tyra Johnston; great grandchildren Janice Catherine Campbell (Issak), Dakota Stamsh, Taneesha Lynn & Marcel Wayne Duncan Jr., Skyla Johnston, Lyndzie Maria & Ryleigh Autumn Johnston, Avery, Madison & Gerald Fred & Carter Stewart; great great grandchildren Alayla Becca Campbell-Jacobs, Ayilem Aaron Lawrence Williams and Txayusm Jim Ayas Joseph; and many loving relatives and dear friends.
We understand this is a difficult time for families and relatives and that many people would have liked to attend but at this time it is impossible due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
We will be hosting a ‘Celebration of Life’ later at which time we will finish our work with handshakes and traditional practices.
