Héctor Eduardo Contreras, the third of seven siblings, was born on June 15, 1948. His arrival was celebrated as if he were the firstborn—the great hope and pride of his father, from whom he received the same name. In 1978, after his father’s passing, Héctor stepped forward to take on many of his father’s responsibilities, helping to support his mother and sisters.
He began his working life at EMPORCHI (Empresa Portuaria de Chile) from 1971 to 1973. From 1974 to 1976, he lived in Bahía Blanca, Argentina, where he held various jobs. He later returned to Chile and worked as a driver for ETCE (Empresa de Transportes Colectivos del Estado) from 1976 to 1979.
In October 1979, Héctor immigrated to Canada, where he built a long and proud career working in the Vancouver drydocks. He was especially proud to be a member of the Marine Workers & Boilermakers Industrial Union, Local 1, remaining an active member until his retirement in 2020.
After retiring, Héctor enjoyed traveling and exploring the Americas, biking to Vancouver’s local beaches and through Stanley Park, and spending time working on his truck and car the old-fashioned way he loved.
Héctor was a loving brother and the proud father of four children—Héctor Jr., Eric, Carol, and Emilio—and a devoted grandfather to six grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his parents, Héctor Sr. and Ubaldina, and his brother Jaime. He is survived by his siblings Nancy, Edith, Eleodoro, Hernán, and Luisa, as well as by his children and grandchildren.
From the shores of Chile to the shipyards and seawall of Vancouver, Héctor built a life defined by hard work, perseverance, adventure, and a deep love for his family. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
