Ida Carpenito passed away peacefully on the morning of February 25, 2021 at Burnaby Hospital at the age of 90. Ida leaves behind two sons, Carmine (Angela) and Gerardo (Cecile), as well as grandchildren Sophia, Dominick, and Ava.
Ida was born on September 1, 1930 in Santa Paolina, Italy. She was the fourth of nine children born to Faustino and Antonietta. She is predeceased by her siblings Raffaele, Gennaro, Maria, and Vincenzo (Elvira). She is survived by siblings Carmine, Paolina, Felice (Rosalia), and Orlando (Fanny). As the oldest daughter, she helped raise many of her siblings during wartime Italy.
Ida came to Canada with her family in 1969, joining extended family in Vancouver. She was fiercely determined to provide a better life for her family. She loved telling stories of the old country and the challenges they faced. She was a master cook and loved baking from recipes only she knew and never wrote down. She adored her grandchildren, who brought her endless joy. Ida had a sharp wit and always spoke her mind. Toward the end of her life, Ida developed progressive dementia, but she maintained many of her early memories.
We would like to thank the staff at Carlton Gardens for their kindness and wonderful care. We would also like to thank the staff at Burnaby Hospital for looking after her so well and keeping her comfortable. Due to social distancing protocol, a private service for immediate family only will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations to Burnaby Hospital Foundation or Alzheimer Society of Canada would be appreciated.
