August 11, 1941 – September 3, 2021
It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of our dear father, brother, husband, uncle, grandfather and friend, Jack Richard Pope.
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Jack’s greatest joys came from shopping trips to Woodward’s and Kingsgate Mall, summer adventures at the PNE and numerous outings and adventures. Jack lived with Cerebral Palsy and proved that determination and a good measure of stubbornness could overcome many obstacles.
His early years saw him travelling between Children’s Hospital and the Shriner’s Hospital in Portland, Oregon for numerous surgeries and rehabilitation. As a young adult, he was an active member of the 3H Club and an advocate for accessibility and inclusion. Jack took great pride being an officer in the Salvation Army. He committed many hours to the Red Kettle Campaign at Guildford Mall in Surrey, BC working daily and collecting thousands of dollars.
In his later years, Jack lived at Minoru Residence where he found a new place to contribute to his community sharing thoughtful and uplifting messages to fellow residents, their families and staff. At the end of the day, he loved to connect with others. His greatest joys were reminiscing about his youth in Vancouver as well as any and every opportunity to sing.
Jack will be deeply missed by his loving wife Joan, devoted daughter Roxanne, son-in-law Kristopher, grandsons Nolan and Reid along with his sisters Doreen (Ed), June (Brad), Lorraine (Louie), brother Bob (Barbara) and many nieces and nephews. He was proud of all his family and their accomplishments.
We trust that Jack is now reunited with his parents Jack and Gladys Pope, sister-in-law Frieda, brothers- in-law Ben and Rod. He will be interned with his Grandmother Porter at Mountain View Cemetery who he missed dearly.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude, love and condolence to the staff of Minoru Residence who cared for ‘Papa Jack’ for nearly 13 years. Your patience and compassion will never be forgotten. Thank you to each and every staff member who crossed Jack’s path, including Elma who continued to visit and care for him in his final days.
In-lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army in honour of Jack Pope.
We are better people for sharing, laughing and being with Jack.
