

Janaki Maheshwara Aiyer was born in Chennai, India on March 14, 1935 and passed away in Burnaby, British Columbia on November 9, 2019. She was lovingly known as Amma and Pati by her kids and grandkids.
Janaki is fondly loved and remembered by her surviving relatives: Brother Balasubramaniam (Channai, India; Sister-in-law Bhagyalaxmi (Baby) (Columbo, Sri Lanka); Brother-in-law Natarajan Iyer (Kunjar) (Columbo, Sri Lanka); Brotehr-in-law Ganesh Iyer (Kannan) (Kalladakurchi, India); Son Muralidhar (Toronto, Ontario); Daughter Lalitha (Burnaby, British Columbia); Daughter Gita (Chennai, India); 5 Grandchildren and 3 Great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband Somasumdara Maheshwara Aiyer.
Janaki earned a Bachelor of Arts-Math Major. She is also a trained Cranatic musician who was an A grade artist on Radio Ceylon and performed regularly. She completed her undergraduate degree after the birth of three babies as a young mother at a time in India when women's education was not encouraged. She taught Math in Sri Lanka for 10 years in two schools - St. Charles school in Jaffna and later in Mangayakarisi Vidyalam, Nallur. She was also a volunteer music teacher at Thurkadevi temple in Burnaby, and an accomplished "Theyvaram Pannissai" graduate who mastered composition in 450 ragas. She worshipped at the Thurkadevi Devi Temple in Burnaby, British Columbia.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at 10:00 am at Hamilton Harron Funeral Home 5390 Fraser Street, Vancouver, British Columbia. Cremation services to follow at Vancouver Crematorium 5505 Fraser Street, Vancouver, British Columbia.
