DOUGLAS, Kylie (aka Peggy GILKER, born Margaret Mary NIXON in the Slocan Valley, Sept. 15, 1934) peacefully and mercifully passed away on December 26, 2019 in West Vancouver after battling Alzheimer’s for several years. She will be deeply missed by her children, Karen, Kim (Don), Kevin and Colin (Cheryl) Gilker, four grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.
Our mother was proud of her settler, labour-activist family roots in the Slocan Valley. It was there that she learned to love politics, books, and knowledge. We share many, many fond memories of lively debates about history and politics fueled by her vast eclectic knowledge and passion for the topics. Her long teaching career started in the South Slocan elementary school and continued in Terrace and 100 Mile House. Recognized as a model teacher, she piloted new techniques and positively affected the lives of many, many students and families.
Mum spent her retirement years living in North Vancouver indulging in her passion for gardening, walking the local trails, volunteering, delighted in hours watching her granddaughter Devyn ride and hanging out with the horses, and spending time with family and friends. We are ever so grateful for the wonderful memories of journeying with Mum as she made one of her top bucket list trips at age 79, visiting the Slocan Valley one last time, valiantly hiking up to Idaho Lookout to look over “where the peaks of the silvery Selkirks reach pure white for the sky”.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, please donate to the Alzheimer’s Society in memorial to our mother.
