Not a day goes by when I don't think of you, mom.  Not a day goes by when I look to see signs of you.  There are days I'm happy that you're with people you haven't seen in ages and there are days I cry my eyes out missing you. 

It will be nearly a year since we last seen each other and as the days near I start feeling like it was just recent that you passed away. Your memory is everywhere. My birthday where you always remember to call me to pick up a red envelope, Christmas where you are the main reason why we get together, Mother's Day where it seemed wrong that I couldn't wish you a "Happy Mother's Day."  And now that summer is here and I see the familiar steamed joong wrapped in banana leaves I can't bear eating them because you didn't make them.

I read somewhere that one will always miss their loved ones.  I now realize how hard it was for you when your mom and dad passed away.

I know you would be upset that I tend to your grave almost weekly because you don't like to be fussed over.  But mom, I miss you more than anyone knows.  Your memory is intertwined in everything and you are so much of who I am.  

Your passing has challenged my beliefs.  If I can believe that you are in a happier place then you will be.  So I will keep trying because there is nothing more that I want than for you to be at peace.  

Hoy sum.  I love you, mom.

We are all having chicken right now, Austin, David, Ana, Laura, Tom and Angus. Yum Yum Mom. Love you

At this time I would like to ask everyone to turn off their cell phones, please.

Welcome family, relatives and friends.  My name is John Yu.  I am honored to be asked as the guest speaker and to help celebrate the life of Lai Yon Wong.

Lai Yon Wong was born on March 4, 1928 in Toishan, China.  She married Yim Foon Wong at the young age of 18.  In China they worked for a rice farm.  At the early start of the Chinese revolution Yim Foon went from Hong Kong and then to Brazil to establish a better life for Lai Yon and their first daughter, Mee Ping.  When Lai Yon settled in Brazil, she had her next 4 children, Laura, Roberto, Mirian and Ana. During this time, they also owned and ran an empanada deli and became god parents of the first son of their life long friends.  Eventually, tired of the poor state of Brazil, the entire family immigrated to Canada in 1968, landing in Napanee, Ontario, and stayed a short while with Yim Foon's sister.  The following year the entire family flew to Edmonton, Alberta and stayed with Lai Yon's mother.  Within the same year the family took a train to Vancouver where they all still live today.

Lai Yon closest family are here today; her loving husband, Yim Foon, with whom she has been married to for 68 years.  Her 5 children are Mee Ping, Laura, Mirian, Roberto and Ana.  Her 9 grandchildren are Anita, Alice, Amy, Mitchell, Emery, Maxwell, Jake, Angus and Austin.  Her only great grandson is 6 months old James Herbert Edgar IV who lives in New York.  Her son-in-laws are Stephen Chan, Tom Smith and David McKie.  Her daughter-in-law is Rosie Wong.  And her grandson-in-law is James Edgar.  
Her surviving younger brother is Mah Kwan Chun.  

When asked to describe Lai Yon's quality in one word from her family this is what they came up with:  generous, loyal, humorous, dedicated, enduring, loving, self-sufficient, independent, nurturing, hard working and self-sacrificing.

Lai Yon Wong was very much loved by her family. She loved each person equally and unconditionally. She made sure that they treated each other with respect, honesty and integrity.  With all the hard work that came with being a mother and grandmother she never asked for anything in return except for their happiness and safety and that they stay together.

Each year Lai Yon would buy a large quantity of turkey and store them in her freezer for the many upcoming occasions like Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years and birthdays. She was tireless when it came to entertaining at her home. She would get up at 6am to bake the turkey, make her giant pot of soup, fry up butterfly prawn wrapped in bacon, and prepare sweet and sour pork and a variety of vegetable dishes. In her usual generous way, she made way too much so they could all take leftovers home.  

Each year for her birthday she would reserve two large tables at her favorite Chinese restaurant. Everyone would get a red envelop and she would get a hug back in return. It made her most happy to see the entire family together in one place with her.

In her earlier years she volunteered with SUCCESS from “Walk with the Dragon” event to teaching English to Asian speakers. She also travelled with members of SUCCESS to various places in BC and USA.  

She was passionate about swimming and did laps daily at the community pool up until a year ago. Eventually, Yim Foon joined her and they had a great social group in the hot tub. Lai Yon also had a social group in the park near her home where she did daily tai chi for several years at 7:30 in the morning with the neighboring seniors. And on top of all this she shopped for groceries for her family, cooked meals and delivered it to her children's homes with her husband.

She was most proud of her garden. Each summer her front yard was full of bright beautiful flowers and two bountiful Chinese pear trees. In the backyard she grew massive amounts of “mo-gwa”, chayote, green onions and cilantro. She would distribute them to the family. In the last few years, she knitted scarves, hats and booties for every single member of her family, even sending some to her granddaughter's family in New York.
Lai Yon was extravagantly generous with her family but very simple with herself. Lai Yon cared for her own mother and father, her husband and his mother, her children and her grandchildren. 

Lai Yon Wong, your family wants to thank you and to tell you to enjoy your deserved life in heaven. Your children are happy and healthy because of your tireless and nurturing love. Your family will always remember you and they will honor your love by passing on the care you gave to them as they will to their children.

I'm nearly finished my delicious oatmeal breakfast with blueberries placed at the bottom of my giant bowl prepared by my lovely wife Rosie. On any given morning, my oatmeal will be ready at my dining table spot. The moment I enter the nook, I always get greeted with a solid hug simultaneously with a question, “Good morning sweetie, did you have a good sleep?” It's always a pretty large bowl of oatmeal and would fit about 3 Chinese bowls of rice. Rosie will also add 2 pieces of peanut butter and jam toast on the side. This has been a routine as far as I can remember. I think my mom help me stretch my stomach by over feeding when she raised me. I was spooning in my last few big gulps and still trying to make sense of why our mother was no longer with us and searching for any reason to cheer myself up. I received a lot of consoling from family and friends.  All words used were kind and supportive and each time I listened to the explanations it started to make slow sense. Individuals find peace in their own way. One reason works for one and makes no sense to the next. We may accept and move on with the loss of someone we care so much about based on concepts of how we were raised and taught. One might never be able to cope with a loss of a loved one. Others may take time through deep and emotional support shared from a wise and trusted friend. Perhaps a long term solution to cope may be to discover a true purpose to look forward in life and not too much behind, appreciate all the good things life still has to offer, not to take life itself and its meaning for granted. When a day ever comes that one can come to terms, that individual may stop searching and accepts. He shall nod and say ok, I see now and it feels right, moves on to the next chapter in life.... my mom would wish I will do just that.

My mom was always a doer. She worked on a farm during her life in China. After moving to Sao Paulo, Brazil, my mom worked with my father very hard in a small restaurant 12 hours a day. She gave life to 4 children while in Brazil and her first daughter being born in homeland China. I learned my mom was back to work following several days after each individual birth but I am grateful to have my first oldest sister Mee Ping raise my 3 sisters and I while mom was at work.  After coming to Canada, my mom landed a job as stream-stress. I can remember my mom would bring her work home to sew. Her last biggest career move was her employment in Chinatown that lasted 15 years where she stacked inventory on store shelves, and brought out vegetables and fruits for sidewalk display and bring it all back in every night. She was also the lunch cook for the Chinatown store crew. It was only after her body couldn't lift heavy crates; she quit Chinatown, and got heavily involved in the lucrative pop bottle collection industry. She was absolutely thrilled that a full shopping cart would rake in the tune of $6 per day. My mom loved her last job as it was true self-employment.

A couple of months ago, her last 2 bags of bottles just sat in the laundry room. She had to stop doing what brought her so much joy.  She decided to close down her business.

So after my oatmeal that morning, I realized what I am supposed to do. Staring at the bottom of my bowl, I witnessed unusual figures left by frozen blueberry stains. Nah, it wasn't any holy symbol. I realized this bowl needs to be soaked quickly with soapy hot water. However, my oatmeal breakfast revealed to me my mom's dedication to act with so much care day after day. Firstly, let me thank my wife for such a deliciously prepared breakfast from this morning. Thank you for that delicious oatmeal breakfast honey. It was yummy.  Secondly, I want to acknowledge my mom's lifetime achievements as simple as it sounded was loaded with loving intentions. She was a woman of pure goodness and nothing was more important to her than her children and grandchildren. My mom's good heart was shown in a lifetime of things she did for people. It is who you do it for that counts rather than just what you can do. I want to share my discovery, a message, let's call it. It's my mom's voice to me. To honor my mom is to learn from her message. Live life responsibly and face our daily challenges with perseverance. Discover your own meaningful purpose and commit to values like my mom has shown me. 
Perhaps, she wants me to take over her job. I may consider resurrecting her little enterprise in the pop bottle collection business and partner with my dad as they both use to have so much fun at it. It will at least benefit the planet and make a bit of coin on the side. So I declare, return it! It's worth it! Please don't forget to leave your empties with me. 

Sadly my mom, my captain, has stepped down. I feel I play second in command; I'm going to step up and try to do her job. Heed her message. Keep my family steered the right direction. Find purpose. Live responsibly. I hope I have the strength, courage and ability to represent all that my mom stood for. Perhaps in time I can earn the respect from my relatives, family and friends, try to fill my mom's shoes and to be called captain.

Memories of mom:

- When I lived at home, mom got up early every weekday morning to cook rice with gee-gho-ben and eggs for breakfast before I leave for work on William Street. As I leave for work, mom got a lunch prepared for me. All my co-workers would always come around at lunchtime to check out what I am eating and  say I have the best lunches. A couple of times I forgot my lunch.  Mom would deliver the lunch to work.  When Mom travelled to Brazil, I made my own lunch by slapping a slab of Spam in between two slices of white bread . When the co-workers came around that time, they teased and said, "your mom did not make your lunch!"
 
- It is Sunday morning at home.  The delicious waft of her cooking wakes me up.  Mom is cooking wonton or congee. Prior to her diagnosis with diabetes, mom cooked a variety of delicious meals that she learned from a Chinese TV cooking show.  I remembered looking forward to dinner because there would be one dish that is new and delicious.

- I had the Norwalk virus at age 45. I was so sick that I thought I was going to die.  Though I was half-dead, I was aware Mom came to visit me on Trinity Street five times that day. She quietly sat at my bedside watching over me being the worried mom that she was.

- When Angus had the bike accident at age 3, I drove to the hospital while mom held onto Angus.  Mom cradled Angus in the waiting room. Angus was so exhausted from bawling that he fell asleep in Mom's arms.

- Mom brought around fruits and cooked food all the time because she didn't want me to go hungry.

- Mom hung the laundry outside to dry and put the sheets back in the beds by evening. I would feel safe and secure sleeping in between the crunchy sheets and from the aroma of fresh sunshine.  Whenever possible, I dry the bed sheets in the sun and use them at bedtime.  The comforting smell of sweet sunshine and the crunchiness of clean sheets bring fond memories of how much mom loved dad, her kids and her grandchildren.

- Mom loved to garden. We would trade plants. Last summer, I noticed mom was very quiet.  I thought she was going through a depression so I tidied her garden to cheer her up. Never did I know that mom was seriously ill.  Mom never complained about it.  I am still tidying up mom's garden.  I choke up with sadness when I see remnants of plants that were given by me and her friends that she lovingly tended.  Mom's love of gardening will go on through me.

My thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of grief.  May your memories bring you comfort.

I want to thank you all for taking such good care of Popo and introducing her to a lot of her first time experiences, whether it's her first ever pedicure, going for Sunday brunches, pigging out at dim sum, getting clean waxed floors, new swim outfits, funny fart jokes, listening to guitar and the list goes on. Not only did she get to literally taste new experiences but she also had such an outpour of love and support from each and every one of you. Popo was always surrounded by so much love and warmth because that's what she exuded - that's who she was. 



Like Laura mentioned, Popo wanted us to not worry about her and take care of ourselves. 

Please take care of each other. Every minute counts so spend it by thinking good thoughts only, call each other, take tons of photos, laugh and hug each other each time you guys meet and say good bye. If we were all Popos, there would only be an abundance of laughs, food (yoke BENG) and fart jokes and sometimes even really loud farts. She taught us a lot and I've learned a lot by watching your tender hearts give.




I can't thank you enough for looking after her. There's too much to list but you know what you contributed to making her quality of life the best possible.

It was really hard for me to get on the plane last night but I knew everyone was in good hands. Popo has a way of bringing us all together and giving us strength. We will always remember her and she's now worry-free, diabetic free running through Chinatown Heaven with Baht Gong. 




The last few days for Popo was like Christmas for her. She left us very peacefully as she slept. I know in my heart she was more than okay. She knew everyone was okay and that allowed her to finally stop worrying and let go.

Memories: 

I remember when I was 5 or 6 after school, Popo used to take me to her favorite meat market to shop. After she purchased her meats, she'd ask the butcher to slice a small piece of chinese sausage for me. I think in Chinese it was called "herng jai". She'd ask him to wrap it up with the brown wax and she'd let me nibble on it all the way back to my parents' supermarket in Chinatown. I tried going back when I was a bit older and asked for the same sausage but the butcher told me it wasn't possible. 




I also remember that she used to work at my parents' supermarket and we would be in the back stuffing lychees in a bag to get them ready to sell. I remember she, Anita and I would set up an assembly line at the back of the supermarket on how to package dates and beans. It was so fun for me as a child. 




I remember I saw a really tall guy who came into the store and stole something from us. I told my grandma but didn't know she was such a brave and feisty gal. She went straight up to him without blinking, took back the bottle of wine he stole and threatened him to never come back. He was so scared we never saw him again. I was so proud of her. 




She reminded me of this story when I was in Vancouver in October 2013. She told me that I was about 6 and one time she saw me stomp my feet and wiggle my body and thought I was dancing. But then she saw a mouse wiggle out through the bottom of my pants and then understood why I was dancing about. I remember it as soon as she reminded me. Back then I wasn't scared of mice because I saw how brave my popo was when she would catch them.




Popo used to make the best "yoke beng" ground meat dish that no one in this world will ever be able to replicate.

To my dearest Popo,








I remember when you would pick me up from school and take me to McDonalds. You'd order me chicken mcnuggets and every time, we'd count them. Sometimes, we'd realize that they gave us an extra one, and we would giggle and feel like we won the lottery. Who would have ever thought that something so simple, so silly, would make for such a happy moment?




I remember that time we walked across the Capilano Suspension bridge. I wanted to show-off that I was a tough and brave five-year old and wouldn't let anyone hold my hand. But then you whispered to me, and asked if I would hold your hand because you were scared to cross the bridge. I took your hand and we walked. Years later I realized you applied reverse psychology on me! You tricky ol' thang!




The memories of you taking care of me, making me your squash soup and traditional Chinese meat loaf, and the way you'd exclaim my name as if there were 50 exclamation marks that followed... those memories are abundant. I treasure them, and can relive them as if they were in real-time - each moment bringing my heart a feeling of joy and warmth.




But even though now you're not here physically to create more memories with me, your spirit remains. You see, they don't make women like you anymore. Your strength, your dedication to your family, your quiet, calm courage, your ability to go through the most trying of times and to always bounce back with tenacity, your tendency to care and nurture everyone else first, your genuine smile and laughter regardless of any stress or challenge you faced -  that's a spirit of a warrior. And that ability to give unconditional love, to fight adversity, and to find laughter even in pain - that is a strength that lives in all of us. That's a strength you passed on to my mother. That's a strength that she passed on to me.




I'm grateful that I had the chance to spend so much quality time with you. I'm happy to look back and know that I put a smile on your face. I miss you, and I will keep missing you. But I understand the cycle of life, and I know, you are somewhere out there. It's interesting how many Atheists don't believe in God until they lose someone close that they love. I don't know who is up there - a God, a spirit of the universe, an unknown energy source... Whatever it is, I do believe there is some higher power that looks after the spirits of those who pass. I have to believe that, because that makes me have faith that this is not an ending, but just a cycle. 




Your beauty, your light, your strength, lives in all of us. I will carry you everywhere I go, and your energy that has helped create me, will be a part of everything that I do.




I love you. Til the day our spirits connect in some day, in some way, in some form...

My mother-in-law accepted me as part of the family from the very beginning. I will always remember her for that quality. Also, Angus and I remember seeing her in the park on our bike rides from school.

If I could define my Mah Mah in one word, it would be selfless. My grandma was the most selfless women I've ever known. But you could say that about anyone who does good in this world. No, I disagree. You will never find a woman with a bigger, warmer heart than my courageous, loving grandma. This woman has affected the lives of many, including myself of course. I cannot begin to tell you what my grandma has done for me. There is no end to the list. It goes on until infinity. But, how is that possible?  What more will she be doing for me now that she is in her better place? Well, she actually never completely left. She has been and forever be a part of me. No one will believe me, they'll call me crazy, but no matter what people say, I feel my grandma inside of me. She continues guiding me and teaching me. Her journey may have come to an end, but her spirit is still a part of everyone who loved her- all the lives she has touched. Even after I am all grown up, she will be there peacefully watching over my brothers and I. I know that all she wants is for us to be successful and happy. I want to let her know that she does not have to worry anymore. My brothers and I can do it, Mah Mah. We will do it for ourselves and you. 
I will never forget your gentle smile, Mah Mah, as you gave, gave, and gave. Whether you were giving food, advice, love- all was given with a smile and hug and I finally understand how. Give. You always gave. You taught me that one will live happier giving than receiving. My grandma was proof that that phrase is true. My grandma has taught me to live life with the glass half full, not half empty. Live life optimistically.

When I was living at home, mom takes Pooky for walks early in the morning seven days a week so I can sleep in. During the walks, mom made new friends at the park. Eventually, both Mom and Pooky looked forward to the morning  walks because they were both social people. Mom took up Tai Chi and went for social outings like Walk With The Dragon  with her new found friends. I remembered being so happy for her and thinking she is finally enjoying her life. Mom and Pooky became best of friends. Pooky was like a grandchild to her. Pooky learned Chinese from mom. Pooky passed away in 1998 but mom never forgotten him. To the last day, my other dogs Tigger and Chilli were pookies to her.

Since meeting Ana, she always talked about what a wonderful mother she had. I knew you were special after hearing all the wonderful things you did for Ana. I can see your positive influence in Ana every day. You gave me such a warm welcome and a great smile whenever I came to your home. I am eternally grateful for allowing me to become part of your family, I will never forget you. Love David


Mom always made the best of whatever situation we were in;  the poor she lived in when she was in China, the poor we lived in when we were in Brazil, the poor we lived in when we came to Canada, her many low paying jobs, the empty house when we all got married or moved away.  Despite all this I remember she had the energy of 10 people, made us our favourite meals and she had good laughs with all of us. Not only was she the most self-sacrificing mom she was the most faithful wife to dad.

Mom was a prankster and I'm sure that's where we all get our sense of humour.  She'd sing the dirty little song her mother, our grandmother, taught her.  And we would giggle after she finished.  Although in her last few weeks she had memory problems, this is something she'd be able to recite fully in her soft voice and it still brought us all to giggles.  I still remember not long ago Roberto flipped mom over his shoulder and spun her like a propeller;   the Christmas where we wrapped her gifts of money around a roll of toilet paper;  the pretend kung fu punches we'd throw at her.  She took this all in stride laughing along with our silliness.  And when she or anyone farted she'd give that look that said, “The dog did it.”  Mom even taught me the best Chinese swear words!

Mom did so much for us without complaining.  The Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years meal for everyone.  When we offered to help she would refuse, mainly because she did not want us to be put out from our schedule.  In the last few years my family would force ourselves upon her to help shop for the annual cemetery ritual.  Initially, one person would drive her to Chinatown and we'd walk with her to the shops.  The following last couple of years we would coordinate with two people to assist mom, one to drive and park close by, the other to assist her to the stores.  This year we were given a list of what to buy.  Only then did we realize how much work mom put into this annual ceremony.  How she did this on her own until last year amazes me.  There was a dispute as to how many chickens we needed; do we buy roasted, do we buy steamed, how many of each;  how many steamed buns, how many egg tarts, what other types of pastries, where are the proper chopsticks, the one ounzers for what type of alcohol?  What do we buy for burning, how many, what type of paper money, what other type of symbolic offering. What kind and how many of each type of incense, short, plain, waxed? We went to the nearby bakery on Hastings, the bakery in Chinatown, the meat store, the flower store.  Do we need to pre-order? And finally, where's the grave plot, what do we put in front of the grave plate for each of our different ancestors?  This year at the cemetery mom sat on a chair watching us with a smile while we frenetically managed to do it right.  

Mom did a lot for all her kids while we lived at home and while we lived away from home.  She would deliver huge amounts of grocery and home cooked dishes to each of us.  We'd complain it was too much but she was ceaseless.  When we bring cooked food and groceries to mom she would take them and redistribute it to the other siblings.  Mom was all about giving.  All the money she received for her pension, birthday, Mother's Day, Christmas would all go back into the pot for us.   As dad said, she never complained.  She was the best spouse anyone could ask for.  Oh yes, she complained we didn't eat enough, not bundle up enough, not get good enough grades, not being careful enough, and so on.  Whenever she did complain it was for us to be happy, safe and comfortable.

She was most happy when there were children around.  Her face would light up whenever the grandchildren came to visit.  Even in the final few years she was in pain she would make the effort to visit everyone bearing food in hand.  She wanted everyone to be happy.  Even  in her final days in the hospital when she knew that we were worried about her, the last audible and purposeful words were “Hoy Sum.”  In her most unselfish and generous spirit she wanted us to be happy even into her last moment.  I love you, mom.

Popo, she always put others ahead of herself and always took care of her loved ones. When my parents went out to the Sun Run every year, she'd always welcome Austin and I to her house so we could stay overnight. She made amazing dinners for us, and always laughed and smiled when cooking with Gong Gong. I'll always love you popo

Popo defined unconditional love....her smile was contagious and so was laughter and sense of humor. She is one of the few I know who saw life as glass always full of water. I loved her cooking and her positive energy will endure in my mind. Now you can rest in peace. Love you so much.

Popo was an amazing person to her whole family and the most amazing grandma. She loved and cared for everyone. When i was little she always made me soup to help with my asthma she cared so much she stayed up all night making it, just for me. Another thing she did was after i was done school for the day she would drive me to chinese school and always make me a snack, every night she would teach me chinese, teach me new words and how to write and read chinese. Eating dinner at her home she'd always give me all the onions and garlic and all the gravy because she knew how much i loved it. She will be missed by many and will always be in our hearts. -Love Austin

My mom is the world best mom. Let me tell you a few things she has done for me. When, I wake up to go to the gym in the morning. In the fridge is a bottle filled with boiled water. My mom never wanted me to drink tap water. We are talking about almost everyday she would boil fresh water. When, I lived in Calgary. I would have surgery on my arm. She would fly to Calgary to take care of me. It was like -35 and wind chill -40. She would come into the hospital frozen. She never complain how cold it was. But, I knew she was cold. She comes on the C train to the hospital and bring me congee. For someone who couldn't speak English. She still manage to get around on the bus. When, I have a cough she would make me special soup. The list goes on. I could write a book about how caring my mom was. She was one special mom. I love you mom and I miss you dearly. Mom, thanks for taking such good care of me. Love your daughter Ana
