Liza Suk Fun Tam passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 21st, 2025, after battling stage IV lung and leptomeningeal cancer. She was 65 years old. She was cared for in her final days by her husband, children, and the staff at St. Michael's Hospice in Burnaby.
Liza was born to 羅用桂 and 李俄旺 in Hong Kong. She was the youngest of four siblings. She immigrated with her family to Canada in 1980, where she went to study business and finance at Concordia University in Montreal. There, she met her future husband Daniel Tam, who had also emigrated from Hong Kong and was studying business and economics. After dating for a few years, they moved to Vancouver together and got married in 1985.
Liza’s first years in Vancouver were spent working for a non-profit organization in Chinatown, while Daniel furthered his studies and became an accountant. After that, she began working at Roundhouse Community Centre and then at Strathcona Community Centre, where she worked as a Seniors and Family programmer until she retired.
Liza and Daniel had their children Samson Timothy in 1992 and Victoria Hilary in 1994. Together with their children and Daniel's mom, they went on many adventures: road trips around the country, skiing trips to resorts in BC, and camping at provincial parks. Daniel was involved with the Scouting movement in Hong Kong, and as a family they became involved members of 4th Northview Scout Group in Burnaby; Liza volunteered to cook at camps while Daniel helped with accounting, and Samson and Victoria attended as youth.
A formidable and determined woman, Liza took care of her household while working a full-time job. She was very practical and no-nonsense, but still warm and caring; she always had an extra place at the table for guests and was often asked to help emcee loved ones' weddings and tea ceremonies.
In her later years, Daniel and Liza enjoyed travelling the world together, going on cruises with their good friends. They always had their next trip planned out, and visited places around the world like Chile, Japan, China, and Portugal. When Liza retired in April 2020 after working more than 20 years at Strathcona, she pursued many hobbies at home: gardening (though she complained about it often), sewing, knitting, and crocheting (various items, like pouches, hats, and scarves), and cooking (she wanted to perfect dim sum dishes, Chinese buns, and pastries). As a result, the home was filled with plants, ongoing crafting projects, and the smell of delicious food.
Liza loved spending time with her family, whether it was facetiming her siblings and cousins every week, eating a delicious meal prepared by her son, or doing face masks and painting her nails with her daughter. She was happy to add to her family when Victoria married Anderson in October 2020 and Samson married Samantha in February 2022. She also loved spending time with her granddaughters Mia (born September 2023) and Ava (born October 2025).
Liza is predeceased by her parents and her parents-in-law, her brother-in-law Siu Ting, and her sister-in-law Katherine. She is survived by her husband Daniel, and her children Samson (Samantha) and Victoria (Anderson, and their children Mia and Ava). She is also survived by her siblings Harry (Connie), Cecilia (Thomas) and Louisa; her sister-in-law Melanie (Lawrence), brother-in-law Henry, brother-in-law Alan (Connie); and their children, her nieces and nephews (Vivian, Kenny, Jaime, Julian, Jonathan, Kar Pak, Cindy, Kar Lok, and Kitty), as well as many cousins and loved ones.
