Maria passed away peacefully on January 24, 2023, at the age of 89, with her family at her side after a long illness. She was a caring, loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend.
Maria is survived by her son Anthony, her son Fabio and daughter-in-law Elizabeth, her daughter Melissa and son-in-law Franco, and her grandchildren, Giancarlo, Marco, Alice and Carmen, and her brother Carlo, and family in Italy and Canada.
Maria was born on April 25, 1933, in Galliera Veneto, Italy and was one of eight siblings, sister Italia and brothers Gino, Giovanni, Giuseppe, Luigi, Nazareno, and Carlo.
During her childhood years, Maria survived the challenges of WWII while sharing many fond memories of her family on their farm in Varese.
Maria met her life partner, Marcello, and were married in Cittadella, Padova, Italy in 1958. Later that year they immigrated by ship from Italy to Halifax and settled in beautiful Vancouver, Canada where their 3 children were born and raised.
They loved getting together with family and friends. They enjoyed their garden, which was always full of vegetables, fruit, and many varieties of flowers. Maria loved flowers and always had fresh cut flowers throughout her home, especially her husband’s prized dahlias.
Maria juggled a lot as a working mother and had a long career in the garment industry as a talented seamstress.
But “family” was the center of her universe and she always made time for everyone no matter what she was doing. Nothing made her happier, than being gathered with her children and grandchildren having meals together and preparing her famous “Nonna’s" pizza, risotto, lasagna or baking Crostoli.
Maria cherished returning home to Italy to visit her family. Italy was always in her heart. She loved talking on the phone with her siblings in Italy. You would often find Maria watching Italian variety shows or listening to Italian music, singing along while tending to the home.
Maria was kind, peaceful and gentle. She gave never-ending support. Maria was a strong person who was well loved by everyone she knew. She had a heart of gold. Maria’s smile and laugh were contagious.
Thank you for being the best Mommy. While we will miss you, your bright smile will live forever in our hearts.
