July 15, 1937 - July 13, 2019
Born in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia, Marshall was the 7th child of John and Edna (Swee) Nichol. Along with his 4 older sisters, 2 older brothers and younger brother Robert, Marshall grew up on a dairy farm until the Great Depression when the family moved to Brisbane.
Marshall and his brother Laurie worked various jobs over many summers, which allowed them to explore Canada, Mexico and Europe. After living in Nassau for some years, Marshall, and his brother Laurie (partner Sherran) made British Columbia their home.
When they settled in Vancouver they worked on a 91 ft sailboat for a year which included ocean voyages to Hawaii and back. Life in Vancouver was where they wanted to be.
Marshall and his partner Hamish owned property on Active Pass, Mayne Island which became their getaway from the bustling city. For many years they enjoyed the raw nature of small island living and worked to build a comfortable and delightful cottage.
After losing his brother Laurie on March 27, 1990 and his partner Hamish Munro on June 8, 1996, Marshall embarked in new directions and making many new friends along the way.
Marshall was involved with the Sojourn Housing Cooperative for many years as a resident, and served on the board of directors in many capacities including President and overseeing the refit of the building. His time at Sojourn was something he truly loved and enjoyed. He leaves many friends at Sojourn.
For many years Marshall was a Snow Bird. His yearly trips to Florida were an ideal destination for him. In his seventies he took up motorcycle riding and was part of several motorcycle enthusiast groups, both in Vancouver and in Florida. In recent years he drove his vehicle to Florida. but while he could, he let the wind blow on his face as he traveled south on his bike. After so many winter seasons in Florida he had made many friends in his time there.
Besides being a nature lover Marshall was a lover of classical music, including opera and often attended the Vancouver Symphony.
Marshall is survived by his brother Robert in Australia, sister-in-law Sherran West, three generations of the Munro family who include him as a much beloved member of the family, and many friends.
A celebration of Marshall’s life will take place on Saturday August 24, 2019 at the Sojourn Housing Coop (1763 Nelson St.) Common Room at 2 pm. A light lunch will be served.
