Martin Donnelly

It is with heavy hearts and great sorrow we announce the passing of Martin Donnelly. Martin passed away at Vancouver General Hospital surrounded by his family on Monday, February 14, 2022 after a long battle with cancer. Martin was born January 11, 1950 in Belfast, Ireland to Gerard and Moya Donnelly. He grew up alongside his brothers and sisters, Gerard, Ciaran, Moya, Mairead, Brenda, and Paul.

By the age of 14 Martin began his apprenticeship as an electrician, and had continued to work as an electrician until the age of 72. As a young man Martin set off to London with friends and his brother to explore and seek out new opportunities. It was there he had met a young woman named Sharon from Vancouver, BC who was travelling through London at the same time. Sharon was the love of his life, and they travelled back to Ireland and married in Belfast on December 4, 1972. Not long after Martin's son Michael was born in May of 1973. Looking for new opportunities to care for and to provide for his new family he moved with his wife and son to Vancouver, BC. In August 1973. Three years later Martin was once again a proud father of his daughter Roisin born in May of 1976.

In Vancouver Martin adapted to a new world, he embraced this new world and all of the people he met with love and open arms. He loved to travel and be with family. There are so many memories that have been made camping, going to potlatches, family and friend gatherings, trips to the beach, long scenic drives, and many wonderful holiday celebrations. Martin made a few trips back to Ireland to see and spend time with his loving family, and those trips back home filled his heart.

Martin’s work ethic was strong and he worked hard to provide comfort, love and security for his family. His family was his everything and we cannot thank him enough for providing the most wonderful life for us. His loyalty and love are unmatched. Martin is survived by his loving wife Sharon, son Michael, daughter Roisin (Colin). Martin will also be missed by his beloved siblings, 23 nieces and nephews, and friends that are so much a part of his family.

We love you Martin and you will be forever missed.

Family and Friends are invited to a funeral service held at Glenhaven Memorial Chapel, 1835 East Hastings Street, Vancouver, British Columbia on Wednesday, February 23, 2022 at 1:30 PM. There will be a viewing prior to the service from 12:30pm to 1:30pm.
