It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our husband, father and grandfather, Michael Stavridis. Michael passed away peacefully with his family at his side on July 1, 2021. He was born in Pethelino, Serres, Greece on October 28, 1935 and immigrated to Canada in 1949 with his family where they resided in Kitsilano.
Michael’s greatest joy was his family and especially his grandchildren. Whether it was at a family outing or just at home in the back yard, Michael was never happier than when he was with his family. Dad worked as a cook and then later chef. Along with his brother Steve, and his brother-in-law Jim, they owned the Village Café at UBC. Dad later went on to become the chef at Hy’s at the Sands. In retirement he kept busy in the garden and later with his grandchildren. He watched over his neighbours and was always available to give a helping hand.
Michael is predeceased by his parents George and Kyriaki, and his sister Jennie Pappajohn. He is survived by his wife Anthoula, daughters Thomasina (Rob) and Georgia (Brian), grandchildren Michael, Kristen and Anthea, his brother Steve (Litsa), brother-in-law Nick (Angela) and many nieces and nephews. Dad will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 8th at 11:00am at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 4500 Arbutus Street, Vancouver BC followed by a Committal Service at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 3789 Royal Oak Ave., Burnaby BC. Flowers are gratefully declined in favour of donations to the VGH+UBC Hospital Foundation – Brain Breakthroughs, in support of Alzheimer’s and other brain research www.vghfoundation.ca/themes/brain-health/.
