March 22, 1917-April 20, 2023
It is with great sorrow & broken hearts that we announce that our father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Miyoshi “Percy” Kimoto has passed away peacefully at 106 years of age with his family by his side. Predeceased by his wife of 54 years Haruye “Sally” Kimoto in 2007, Percy was a loving father & father-in-law to Dennis (Cathy) and Ron (Eiko). He was a beloved Grampa to Troy (Carmen), Tracy (Mark), Gregory and Marc (Jayne) and great-Grampa to Dylan, Tyler, Ryan, Logan and Declan.
Born in Cumberland BC, Percy worked tirelessly in the lumber industry at Red Gap Sawmill in Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island from 1937-1941. During the Internment years, he helped to build homes for the Japanese community in Lemon Creek and later for his parents in the town of Crow’s Nest on the BC/Alberta border. In 1951, he returned to the BC Coast and he became an employee at Matsumoto Shipyards in Dollarton, BC. Percy’s final career was that of a gardener for the Vancouver Parks Board until his retirement in 1982. He then continued his love of gardening at home well into his 90’s sharing his beautiful flowers, fruits & vegetables with his family, friends and neighbours.
Family was important to Dad. He shared his love of sports with us all; from being an avid Canucks hockey fan to his enjoyment of Blue Jays baseball games and in later years, his excitement of Grand Sumo on TV Japan (often watching from midnight to 2 AM) which provided him with great pleasure and enjoyment.
Percy will be eternally missed by his family and a private service will be held in his memory.
Our family would like to thank the staff at Robert Nimi Nikkei Home for their exceptional care and kindness during his residence there.
For those who wish to make a donation in Percy’s memory, our family would appreciate such be made to Nikkei Seniors Health Care & Housing Society for Robert Nimi Nikkei Home.
