Mo was born and raised in Panyu, China. In 1957 she embarked on a new chapter of her life when she married Ping Chiu in Hong Kong. In time, Mo and Ping welcomed the arrival of Ming, Helen and Mary. The young family emigrated to Canada in 1967. They lived briefly in Toronto, ON before choosing Vancouver, BC as home. Wendy and Betty soon joined the family.
In 1975, she moved from Chinatown to her forever home in East Vancouver. Mo and Ping were entrepreneurs and operated various restaurants. The first one was Four Happiness on Commercial Drive in Vancouver, followed by Lonsdale Seafood Diner in North Vancouver. New Fort Restaurant, in historical Fort Langley, was their last business before retiring in 1999.
Mo’s easy-going nature, generous spirit and graciousness forged many lasting relationships. At the start of her retirement, Mo travelled to Australia, England, Mexico, United States (Alaska, California, Hawaii and Oregon) and within Canada. She also loved exploring her own city and navigated public transit with confidence.
She had a green thumb and could revive any plant. Mo was a foodie with a discerning palate and open to trying a variety of cuisines. She was also a sports enthusiast and enjoyed watching hockey, basketball, soccer and wrestling, to name a few. Mo was a devoted learner and stayed up-to-date on current affairs; she dedicated her evenings to “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy”.
Mo was proud of her children. She instilled in them a strong work ethic and sense of adventure. She enjoyed being Poh Poh to her grandson, Cameron and loved when he played the piano for her. Mo was predeceased by her husband, Ping, of 49 years and son, Ming. She is survived by her daughters Helen, Mary, Wendy (Barrie), Betty and grandson, Cameron.
