Olga Victoria Calvo (Araya) or as her grandchildren called her, "Mamina" passed away peacefully on October 15th, 2013 at the incredible age of 103 years old! Pre-deceased by her beloved husband and one true love, Carlos Alberto Henriquez-Garrido, she is survived by her son Felix, grand-daughters Connie, Marcela and Alexandra, several step-grandchildren, great grandchildren and great step-grandchildren.
Born and raised in Santiago, Chile she was an independent, strong, elegant, and always glamorous lady. Daughter to Jose Calvo and Maria Araya, she was the third of five children, older sisters, Dina and Tulia, brother Galvarino and little sister Gladys. In her younger days after completing her post secondary education she became a well educated, respected and sought after secretarial typist, a rarity amongst most girls of the 1930’s and 40’s. In her private life, she was an author and a poet, a singer and dreamed of being an actress. She loved her piano, she loved her theater, she loved her flamenco and she loved her tangos. In 1977 after her husband passed, she immigrated to Canada to be with her only son, Felix or “Mito” , as she adoringly called him. Here, she lived out her long days on the shores of English Bay. She absolutely loved the view of the ocean. She never re-married after her husband Carlos passed and remained a devoted mother never leaving her son’s side until she passed. In her life, she got to see the invention of cars, the talking “moving pictures”, airplanes, the television set, the Second World War, man’s first steps on the moon, computers, cell phones and lived long enough to see the year 2000 which she thought she would never achieve. Her grandchildren had this to say about Olga:
“I remember going to Mamina’s house and loving her “dressing room” where she had elaborate gowns, costumes, wigs, feather boas and a drawer full of beautiful buttons... Shiny buttons, puffy buttons, big buttons and little buttons. She always wanted to be the next Bette Davis or Gretta Garbo. I remember being just a child and her saying, ‘Never go out without your make up on, always exercise your mid-section, especially after childbirth and don’t ever, ever go out without a bra on.’ That was my grandma.” ~Connie
“My Mamina... Mamina always saw me as the quiet one and so she liked to tell me her stories. I would listen intently while playing with her castanets. Occasionally, Mamina would take me downtown to have tea. We would have a great time eating treats and looking at the shops on our way home. I remember her lecturing me on how to behave like “a proper young lady.” She also gave me lots of beauty tips like: “rub half a lemon on your face to exfoliate, brush any hairs on the side of your face up, so the hair will grow finer, put olive oil on your hair once aweek”... beauty advice I still remember to this day!” ~ Marcela
“As a child I loved playing dress up with all of her glamorous furs, high heels, hats and gloves. She never complained when I'd splash on her perfume or took out her pearls and all of her jewellery to play with. I remember her brushing my hair and telling me I was beautiful. She would let me put my feet upon hers and would dance with me just to make me laugh. Her journals and letters are what I now hold dearest to my heart, I owe my talents as an author and public speaker to my Mamina Thank you Mamina.” ~Alex
In her last days at Haro Park Centre the nurses remember her sitting in her chair, looking out the window, being happy, smiling and always singing her songs.
She will never be forgotten, Olga, the most glamorous lady we ever knew.
