Paul Ellis Nielsen

May 17, 1943January 10, 2020

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Paul Ellis Nielsen on January 10th, 2020 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Born on May 17th, 1943 in East Vancouver, BC, Paul is survived by his 12 children, 25 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and his 7 sisters and 2 brothers. He is joining Rosemary, the love of his life, who has been living 23 controversy-free years in heaven…that is about to change. The man, known as Dad, Papa, Poppa, Grandpa, Senior and Butch, always knew how to make anyone he came across feel special and uncomfortable at the same time. He read the obituaries every morning. When asked “why?”, he would respond: “just checking if I’m in here”. So, Dad if you are reading this, you finally made it.

A prayer service will be held on Friday, January 17th at 6pm and a Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 18th at 12pm at St-Francis of Assisi Parish, 2025 Napier Street in Vancouver. Interment will follow the Mass at Ocean View Burial Park, 4000 Imperial Street in Burnaby (Heaven’s Gate section).

I’ll never forget how much your Dad teased us each time we came by the house to meet up with you Serena. What a funny man! Buzzing from room to room... From his chair in the living room out to the kitchen to the front door... He never eased up... Our laughter and blushing wouldn’t let him, no matter how much you begged him! 😜😄 (30 years ago).
~ Much love to you and your entire family as he now gets back to teasing your Mum. ❤️

Paul well remembered as a stalwart supporter and political adventurer in the early years on life affirming events and adventures. Always the interest of a journalist to analyse any situation while keeping his humour and smile readily available. God richly Bless his legacy and regards to his family.

He was "Mr. Nielsen" to me. A title fitting his role as the head of a large and amazing family. I cherished seeing Mr. Nielsen in years past, walking on Nanaimo or Hastings Streets, or sitting in his arm chair at home. He was welcoming, funny and indeed made me feel special. I thought he had many more years left. Tears and condolences to all of Mr. Nielsen's family from ours (Bob, Marika, Willem and Tina).

I remember with fondness many evenings at Butch & Rosemary's with my friend Susan, his sister. The conversation was always stimulating and they made me feel at home. Rest in peace, Butch and my condolences to your family.

Although I hadn't seen him in years, some of my most treasured recollections of Mr. Nielsen was visiting with him & Mrs. Nielsen and include the collective sounds of laughter, the voices and intellect.
