To the Yamamoto Family:  The morning after Randy passed away I began to write a song, almost the instant I learned the news. I truly loved Randy for all he was, and I called him 'brother,' echoing what so many feel.  Yet, yesterday I ran some of it by someone who said, 'he was an only child.'  I know that, which makes this even harder.  Yet, he was such a trooper and I know there is some sense to all this even if it's hard to see. So I rewrote the word 'brother' as 'comrade' which might be more fitting, if less confusing.  Here are the lyrics.  I have to record it and as soon as I do I'll send it.  Randy will always remain a cherished and beloved part of my life because he really was a brother.  As the song says...

It is with a very heavy heart that I am writing this.  I am so sorry that it has taken me a long time to write a message to you but it just didn't seem real.  

We were very fortunate to have had a chance to meet him when he was in Toronto earlier this summer.  Randy always had a smile and kind words to say and he was so very gentle.  We will always remember him enjoying our get togethers and talking about how great all the food was. 

A very kind, funny, spiritual soul - Randy was more like family than friend.

    I remember the young men's Caledon conferences when you were always the last one to go to sleep, talking and joking around with old friends and new in the multi-purpose room. You made everyone laugh  with your excellent female impersonations on culture nights.
  Later, I was so encouraged by your example and compassion as young men's leader. It was always so great tohave you visit the young men in Montreal. 
  More recently, we saw each other at the family conferences where you were always present to make sure everything was ok.You will always be an inspiration to me, taking care of everyone  and every problem quietly, with no big fuss, with a warm smile. 
  The other day it occurred to me as I was feeling so sad  about your passing, that you lived a life of absolute victory, showing us all how to support Kosen Rufu, literally, at each moment, with each person we are with.

A cornerstone of Canadian and global kosen rufu, you live in me as I vow to transform my own character so I can learn from your calm generousity, the source of which is Sensei's heart and your own wonderful family, whom I am chanting very hard for, as I am for you.  Now it's my turn to be there for you, and reading all these messages, it's clear that you were consistent as your brilliant attitude, dedicated ethic and smile. I wrote a song for you on Sept. 17th called "I Will Remember You," and at the Toronto memorial yesterday, people again and again uttered this phrase.  The last part of the chorus goes, "Husband, brother, father, friend, son, disciple, purpose without end." I hope you know how profoundly you are loved and treasured. The shock waves caused by your hasty departure will reverberate in our lives forever teaching us to believe in the power of daimoku because that is your life and legacy.  I am better for having worked with you behind the scenes for the better part of more than two decades.  I did my White Lily shift today (daytime reception), for the first time in like, 15 years, I didn't see or talk to you.  How grateful I am to have known you.  My love to Shinobu-son, and the entire family. You are as usual, ahead of the curve because as devastating as this is (and I can't imagine how hard it is for the Yamamoto family), you are showing us the map as one of Sensei's truest disciples. Gentle, funny, strong, inspiring, and courageous Randy. I will treasure the memories we had in our youth division days and how you always encouraged me in every situation. I was shocked to hear that Randy had passed away suddenly.  His smiling face greeting all of us at Caledon, will surely be missed.  Randy was always so cheerful, I never saw him without a smile on his face.  Take care Randy, you are in a better place now.

To die well, one must have lived well. For those who have lived true to their convictions, who have worked to bring happiness to others, death can come as a comforting rest, like the well-earned sleep that follows a day of enjoyable exertion.  You had lived well and had a good death Randy. RIIP.

I met Randy for the first time in 1984 when he was in the brass band in Vancouver.  He was always such a loveble, kind and cheerful person who seemed to really have other people's best interests in mind.  His wonderful presence at Caledon was really taken for granted by me and I'm so grateful to have known him and today at the Ottawa SGI Centre we chanted and told loving stories about precious Randy.

Trust" is the consummate treasure. Leaders should capture people's hearts with sincerity and trustworthiness(Daisaku Ikeda). Randy's kind patient manner perfectly exemplified this guidance.  Those of us who knew him filled the culture centre today, standing together in fondness for Randy and regret for his loss. Randy did more to bring out people's humanity in 48 years than others would do in 1000. 
Shinobu and family, please accept my condolences.

My condolences to the family. May you stay strong and be in peace in your lost of beloved husband and father.

Thank you very much for everything Randy.  I had a great fortune to be able to advance kosenrufu with such an amazing role model like you. Especially through the youth training course in 2008 and Caledon conferences, you inspired me to become a better, stronger person. You showed me what it meant to follow the path of oneness of mentor and disciple. Whenever I face challenges, I'll strive even harder remembering your warm smiles.

When I went to Kenshu (Japan Training) in 2006, I was a bit anxious with it being my first overseas training, but when I met Randy there, he had a very calm and welcoming aura and presence about him. We were roommates and I was able to settle in and really enjoy the training. He will forever be a great mentor, friend and brother to me!

Our sincerest appreciation to Randy for your contributions to SGI Canada's peace movement. We'll remember Caledon and all our activities centres across Canada, including Vancouver Culture Centre. I remember our last conversation at Caledon so vividly, not too long ago. You had shared with me your thoughts on how wonderful it be if your children could receive Soka Education. You had asked whether Japanese was necessary to study at my school (Kansai Soka), and if we provided dorms. 

I will work tirelessly for the sake of Kosen Rufu and Soka Education with you always at heart, because I know your true victory depends on how we continue to live on your behalf.

Wonderful Randy! We knew you as a young boy in the Brass Band (big guy, with a big smile on the big drum), hanging out with the Mayede boys and Nori Shirakabe. (Lots of high jinks!) Working with your Mom and Dad, you were an absolute piller in the SGI. The Yamamotos were missed when they moved to Caledon, but we were all so proud of the work that you were doing for Kosen Rufu. After that only an occasional glimpse of you, here and there, working diligently behind the scenes, always smiling. You will always be in our hearts, remembered in our daily prayers. When I think of Randy, I remember him and my brother Richard and David playing together while our parents would run meetings back in the "Pioneer" days.  Many people change as they grow into adults but Randy always remained his calm, smiling, positive self.  I'd like to think Randy left the world a better place because of his contributions. Thanks so much John and Kumi-san for raising such a capable person. My sincerest condolences to the family.

Over the years, we have had numerous opportunities to connect with one another through SGI activities and in other settings. Back in the days when I was still in the young men's group, one of the joys of going to the Caledon centre was Randy greeting us as we came. He always had a welcoming smile and made me feel like I was coming back home away from home. He was always easy going and easy to approach, and it was always a pleasure talking with him. The way in which he supported the young men, with easy going humour, was something that I would always remember about him, and is something that greatly inspired me. Randy: Still remember you from the Brass Band back in the day. Always there, always steady.  The silent rock keeping the rhythm.  You will be missed.

Randy: I remember clearly doing soka-han activity together at the Toronto Culture Centre back in 1994. I will never forget your constant smile and supportive energy. Thank you Randy!

Growing up, Randy was like a big brother to me (all of us!).  He was always laughing, always finding the humor in things, always bringing joy to everyone around him.  And keeping an eye out for us.

Get some rest brother.  Don't worry, we'll continue to work for Kosen-Rufu in your place.

Randy, your time with us was far too short.  Thank you for enriching our experience here on earth.  You were and continue to be a true blessing and a saint.  You made the world a better place and you will be missed.

Whenever Randy and I met, it was like time never passed. We grew up in SGI side by side, playing together while our parents did their best to introduce this Buddhism in Vancouver. As we grew into our teens, we were given the opportunity to take responsibility in the brass band. Then, he and his family had the great fortune to take care of Caledon. During the 20+ years he was in Ontario, we kept in touch, always talking about our two favourite subjects, achieving kosen-rufu in Canada and how and when the Vancouver Canucks would win the Stanley Cup! Just before he passed, we were planning to meet up and as usual have our 'serious' and 'not so serious' discussions. He was a brother to me.  I'll miss our talks, but Randy I promise you while I'm still around, I'll work that much harder to achieve the dreams you and I talked about.  Your 'brother' in kosen-rufu...

Randy:

You remind me of my best friend back home in Japan. Warm hearted soft-spoken man. 

I remember talking to you feeling very excited to work for kosen rufu together when I became a men's group area leader. 

I have engraved your passion for kosen rufu in my life and continue work for kosen rufu with you alongside Sensei for the rest of my life. 

Thank you for showing us the best example of a great man in faith.

Dear John, Kumi, Shinobu, Ashley, Justin, friends and relations.  It is with deep and profound sorrow that I express my deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences.  I can't imagine the pain this separation must be for you.  His rare, quite, strength, and deeply spiritual nature will continue, and there is much which remains.  It is my true pleasure to have know him. To Randy was given unimaginable joys on earth; his certainty in NMRK, not faith, while in life, and upon his passing; peace, rest, and happiness.
