With deep love and remembrance, the family of Richard Dennis Bushey announces his passing on May 25, 2025, at the age of 83, after several years of living with Alzheimer’s disease. Richard passed away surrounded by family at Minoru Residence in Richmond, B.C.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 58 years, Jeanne, his daughters Sarah Loat (Christopher), of Richmond and Jessica Bushey of Vancouver, as well as his cherished grandchildren, Kyra and Andrew Loat. He also leaves behind relatives (Foresi, Swotchak and Antonucci) in the United States.
Richard held an M.A. in Circumpolar Studies from the Architectural Association School of Architecture, (AA) in London, England, and a doctorate in Urban Planning from Western University in California. His career took him across Canada’s North, working for CMHC in Iqaluit, NU and Yellowknife, NT, and later as a consultant in Energy Efficient Construction. After relocating to Richmond in 2002, her served as the Executive Director of the Building Officials Association of British Columbia (BOABC) until his retirement in 2014 at age 70. He continued his community engagement as President of his Strata Council for over a decade.
Richard was a voracious reader, fascinated by astronomy, history and stories of others’ lives – his favourite section of the New York Times was the obituaries! He also enjoyed the outdoors (always taking the path less travelled), classical music concerts, photography, and baseball. He was at his best when engaged in lively discussions about politics with his family.
To his grandchildren, “Gpa” was a big kid at heart – spending summer days swimming at the lake, playing ball in Poplar Park, tossing frisbees, and watching sunsets from the big swing before scanning for shooting stars. Kyra and Andrew remember his steadfast presence at their sports games, dance performances and graduations: “Gpa supported us in every way he could.”
Richard was a generous and caring soul, always ready to share his time, energy and expertise. His neighbours and community appreciated his thoughtful leadership, and his family could always count on him to be there – present, supportive, and loving.
We will cherish every memory, Richard, Dad, Gpa.
Rest easy. We will miss you deeply.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
