In Loving Memory of Scott Evan Schell
1960 - 2021
Born April 19, 1960 in Swan River, Manitoba, the eldest son of Agnes and Geordie Schell, Scott passed away on March 25, 2021 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Scott grew up in Paradise Valley in the Northwest Territories and was a long-time resident of Vancouver. This man, a Cree Indigenous with heritage from Cumberland House, SK JCB-Treaty#5/Icelandic Red River Valley, expressed his love in his words, giving and acts of service.
Scott was not average, as a happy child, we knew him as incredibly talented and intelligent. As an adult, he suffered Paranoid Schizophrenia and life became an uphill battle for Scott. Many of his days were spent in pain. But we all learnt “Mental Illness is not a personal failure,” (Dr. Brundtland, WHO). Scott was confident that our Creator Jehovah heard his pleas and will answer him in his own resurrection. “In like manner, [God’s] spirit also joins in with help for our weakness; for the problem is that we do not know what we should pray for as we need to, but [God’s] spirit itself pleads for us with unuttered groanings.” (Romans 8:26) The COVID-19 pandemic indirectly contributed to the death of Scott with the lockdowns, quarantines and social isolation compounding and intensifying the effects of Paranoid Schizophrenia.
Scott was an un-baptized Jehovah's Witness in the Creekside Congregation (Vancouver, BC) and zealously shared his faith in the heavenly Kingdom government of God and its promises of future perfect health, building his own house & vineyard, having plenty of rewarding work and the resurrection of his family. Scott was an avid learner with a wide array of knowledge in many subjects; his most recent endeavour was to learn the Chinese language so that he could share his faith with the many Chinese-speaking people in Vancouver. Scott succeeded in this goal and brought joy to people that he encountered in his path.
Scott also spoke Cree and was an artisan who had a great passion for poetry, writings, paintings and enjoyed sharing his craft with friends and audiences. Scott was a published poet and submitted writings to a variety of venues and loved public recitals. Scott was also a placer miner and a keen outdoorsman who enjoyed connecting with the earth and reflecting on the many gifts from the Creator. Scott trekked across this vast country with the eye of adventure and the heart of a pioneer.
Scott loved his family, his spiritual brotherhood, his God Jehovah and King Jesus Christ. He will be remembered for his rugged exterior, rich sense of awkward and blunt humour, grit, and strong sense of justice for all.
“I know your deeds, and your love and faith and ministry and endurance.”
