Soon Kun "Ken" Wong was born in Longpan village, Hoiping city, Guangdong province in China. Ken passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2025 at Mount St Joseph hospital days after we celebrated his 95th lunar birthday. He will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his wife Wing Hun "Coreen", four daughters Kory (Bob), Maureen, Lil, Carol (Doug) and two sons Rick (Jenny) and Rob (Michele) as well as nine grandchildren Kyle, Lindsay, Cameron, Kimisha (Aja), Mariko (Jordan), Ashley (Raul), Makeo, Alahni, Teylor and one great grandson Pippin.
Ken relocated to Guangzhou city in 1945 and attended public schools. He graduated from Guanzhou University Affiliated Middle School. Ken immigrated to Toronto, Canada with his mother in 1949 and became a Canadian citizen in 1950. While in Canada, Ken attended high school studying ESL and worked at his father's restaurant called New Service. He relocated to Barrie, Ontario to work as a waiter for 3 years. Ken returned to Hong Kong to marry Coreen on September 19, 1952. The couple returned to Toronto shortly after their wedding. From 1953 to 1961 they raised two boys and four girls in Toronto.
In 1962 they moved to Vancouver and opened a western style cafe called Ron's Cafe on July 1, 1964. He was the cook while Coreen managed as waitress. After they sold Ron's Cafe, they owned and operated another restaurant called Popular Cafe which specialized in fish and chips. They were in the restaurant business for 24 years until they retired in 1988. After retiring at age 58, Ken enjoyed family gatherings, gardening and maintaining the fence that he built himself on his only day off each week from the restaurant.
Ken and Coreen returned to their hometowns to visit their ancestors three times. They have been to the Great Wall, Hong Kong and traveled to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Taiwan, Hawaii, Caribbean and many cities in Canada and USA.
Ken happily supported and welcomed his relatives and friends. He annually donated to Burnaby Hospital, Vancouver General Hospital, Heart and Stroke, BC Children's Hospital, BC Lung, Vancouver Food Bank, BC Cancer, Canadian Red Cross, CNIB Foundation, Covenant House, Diabetes and Orbis as well as volunteered for over 40 years at Ming Sun Society.
Ken is survived by his wife Coreen, six children, nine grandchildren and one great grandson. He was much beloved by his family, friends and community.
Thank you Ken. You remain always in our hearts.
