Szyman Shu Wing Chang passed away at age 80 on November 11, 2024 in Richmond, British Columbia. Born in 1944 to Kang Ming Cheung and Kwai Yim Fu, Szyman had 3 brothers and 3 sisters. He was pre-deceased by his parents, older brother Francis, and younger brother Tim.
Szyman immigrated to Canada in 1973, leaving his employment at CP Air, Hong Kong, settling in Vancouver. After working in the food service industry, he was eventually re-employed by CP Air, Canada, in the accounting department, (which later became Air Canada) where he worked in Flight Operations for the rest of his career. He was married and had two children, Liza and Tom. After his divorce, Szyman co-founded Richmond Garden Restaurant, taking only one evening off a week while continuing with his employment in Air Canada during the day, so he could purchase his first home.
In the early 1980s, Szyman married his co-worker from CP Air, Lena Lee and became step-father to two teenagers, Mona and Arthur. His work at the restaurant continued until it was sold in the late 1990s. Since then he has had more time to attend to his beloved garden and cultivating flowers. After retiring from Air Canada in the early 2000s, he adjusted to a regular rhythm of morning coffee at Tim Hortons with friends and neighbours, daily long walks and qigong. He grew his classical music collection, with a special focus on rare violin recordings, an instrument he loved and practiced regularly.
Szyman passed away peacefully surrounded by family after a brief and devastating struggle with aggressive lymphoma.
Szyman was a faithful husband to Lena Lee, father to Liza, Tom, Mona and Arthur, and loving grandfather to Ethan, Charlotte, Kenley, Maria, David, Margot and Heather. He was close to his nieces and nephews including Chui, Paul, Warren, Matthew, Tobin, Felicia and Eugenia. He is survived by his siblings Patricia, Anna, Muriel and Bob.
