It is with great sadness we advise the passing of our dear relative Tammie Mae Baker. She passed away on July 7, 2023. Tammie was born on August 8, 1958, at St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, BC to her late parents Velma ‘Mazie’ Doreen Antone, and Alvie William Baker. Tammie grew up on Eslha7án̓ (Mission IR no. 1) She attended St. Paul’s day school, Westview Elementary School, and St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School. She completed her Counselling/Life Skills Coaching from Royal Rhodes College, and Accounting at Capilano College. Tammie was an avid believer in healing. She went to Choices and lived on the path our ancestors blazed for us. She was an original member of the Pow Wow Committee. Tammie worked for the Urban Native Youth treatment home, Administration for the Mosquito Creek Marina, and Ayas Men Men for the past 15 years. She cared deeply for all the babies of the community. She had a gentle, thoughtful, cultural approach to help build a strong base for our Squamish Nation families. Tammie brought an unconditional positive regard to everything she did. Her no judgement approach welcomed everybody to the safe environment she had created. Tammie was wise beyond her years. She followed up and checked in even with the little things. She accomplished Canoe Journey 2004 with the Squamish Ocean Canoe Family. One of her favourite sayings was “Keep the Faith.” In her youth she was a Softball, Basketball, and Darts Champion. Tammie was the ultimate Ta7a. When her first grandbaby was born, she stepped up and into the role, to her family, and a ta7a figure to the community. Tammie’s family is her legacy, carrying on the teachings of a strong, beautiful, resilient matriarch.
Tammie is survived by her daughter Sarah Arlene Baker (Carl), grandchildren Kaitlyn Doreen-Mae Baker (Zachary), Joshua Sebastian Baker, Jacob Paul Baker; siblings Alroy William Baker (Elaine), Alvie Glen Baker, Leah Marie Baker, Bert Scott Baker, and many loving family members and friends.
