Yui For came to Canada in 1954 to work with his father at the grocery store English Bay Fruit Market. He eventually took over the business and worked there until 1985, spending a large part of his life there, working long hours each day, 7 days a week. In 1959, he wed Hang Hung and was happily married for 56 years. Together, they had 4 children and 8 grandchildren.
In 1985, when he sold the business and retired, he took on gardening and enjoyed trips to the race track on weekends, and loved watching the Vancouver Canucks and BC Lions. Never truly taking the time to travel in his days as a grocer, he joined his family on a trip to Hawaii to attend his eldest son’s wedding.
In recent years, his health started to deteriorate with issues in walking. In 2014, he decided to sell his home of over 40 years in Chinatown, moving to a condo near Metrotown. It was to be the start of a new beginning for him and his wife. Unfortunately, the time in the condo was short as he suffered a bad fall after living there for less than 3 weeks. He suffered a broken hip, had emergency surgery; confined to a wheelchair and he made a slow recovery in the hospital. After a couple months, he was eventually moved to New Vista Care Home.
At the care home, he was loved by staff and other residents. Just like his time at the grocery store, people always greeted him “Tommy” or “Papa”. In response, Tommy, a quiet man, would always acknowledge others with a simple smile and wave. He was gentle, nice man and always respectful to all.
On Friday, May 22 at 1:15pm, after finishing his lunch he quietly passed away at the age of 87. He lived a long and happy life. Everything he did was for his children and his family. Dad, we love you and thank-you for everything you have done for us.
