I would like to share a few words about my Nani’s journey, life, and the impact she had on me as a person.

It is hard to talk about my Nani in this short message as we had numerous memories together. But I’ll try in a few words here, she can be described as someone who was very sharp, a great listener, hardworking, intellectually curious, self-motivated, and strong-minded and strong-willed. She lived a life of service and deeply cared about her children, grandchildren, family, and friends.

My Nani immigrated to Canada in 1980 with my Nana late Ram Jit. She lived half of her life in Canada and dedicated her life to selfless service to her community and Mandir.
When my Nani was not busy taking care of me and her other grandchildren, she would be at the Vedic Mandir in Richmond. She would take me to the Mandir and eventually enrolled me in Hindi school at a young age.

In the family, she would be the person that everyone would turn to if they needed spiritual guidance about faith and practice. She had abundant knowledge and owned almost all holy scriptures/books from the Vedas to Bhagavad Gita. Whatever knowledge she gained from her readings, she would always make sure to share key points and learnings with everyone. Her goal was always to instill good values and spread love to anyone she met. In the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., my Nani knew that “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can that.” 

I would like to leave you with a few lines from the Bhagavad Gita that my Nani instilled in me.

It goes as the following, “What did you produce, which you think got destroyed?” You did not bring anything, whatever you have, you received from here. Whatever you have given, you have given only here. Whatever you took, you took from God. Whatever you gave, you gave to him. You came empty handed, you will leave empty handed.” 

Nani, I am a better person because of you!

Thank you for always putting a smile on your face whenever I had the chance to visit you and for always asking me if I had enough food in my belly. 

You lived such a purposeful life and have impacted so many.  Your daughter and your granddaughter are some of the strongest women I know and you are directly responsible for their unconditional love and compassion for others.  I am so thankful to have had the chance to meet you <3
