Vittorio La Chimea

It is with saddened hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved father and nonno Vittorio La Chimea. Vittorio passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on December 22, 2024.

Vittorio was born on the 12th day of September 1940 in Sambiase, Calabria, Italy. While working during the olive harvest in Calabria, he met his soul mate Giovannina Mete and they married in 1965. They immigrated from Italy to Canada in 1966 to begin their new life together settling first in the Italian district of Commercial Drive in Vancouver. In 1993, they moved to Powell River, BC.

Vittorio was a principled, strong willed, dignified and a God loving man with an enormously generous heart. He helped everyone; family, friends and strangers alike.

Vittorio became a master stone mason having studied his craft in Italy and he worked throughout British Columbia where his legacy lives on. His artistic ability and craftsmanship was exemplified in the precision and pride he took in his work. He was a hardworking man with an indomitable spirit.

Vittorio had a deep love of nature and was an avid gardener growing a vegetable garden for more than 50 years. He generously shared the fruits of his labour with neighbours and friends.

A man of simple pleasures, he enjoyed immensely a good Italian meal lovingly prepared by his wife over good conversation with family and a glass of his homemade wine.

Vittorio was predeceased by his beloved wife Giovannina, the great love of his life. He is survived by his children Rosanna, Marisa and Antonio, his grandchildren Adrianna and Massimo and many relatives in both Canada and Italy.

Vittorio expressed his unwavering love for his family by being the force that kept us grounded and gave us roots. He was our rock, our compass, our inspiration and our hero.

Loved and remembered forever.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, 2025 Napier Street in Vancouver on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 at 11:00 am. Private Cremation.
