

Richard E. Karnuth, 78, passed away, Sunday, May 23, 2010 in Vancouver, WA. Born September 10, 1931 in St. Paul, MN, he was the son of the late Al and Bernice Karnuth. Richard grew up in North St. Paul where he graduated from North St. Paul High School in 1949. Richard joined the United States Navy after graduation, where he proudly served his country until he received his Honorable Discharge as a Korean War Veteran. He then attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota, where he met his wife of 50 years, Mildred. Richard then received his Master’s Degree from Oregon State University.
Richard enjoyed bowling, hunting and fishing, camping, and traveling the world. He visited Japan, Turkey, much of Europe, and Australia, to name a few. He was a member of the Rotary Club, a Bible Study volunteer, a Red Cross Volunteer Instructor, and a school volunteer, where he received a Presidential Award for his contributions. He was the past Commander in 1966 of the America Legion Post #14, in Vancouver.
He is survived by his wife Mildred (Magnuson) Karnuth and son David A. Petersen; his sisters JoAnn Barnum and husband John, and Barbara Andersen. He had three grandchildren, Jason Petersen, Jonathan Petersen, and Jennifer Petersen and her husband Justen Homer. He had four great grandchildren; Allison, Kayleigh, Emberlin, and Ashlyn Homer. He also had two nieces, Ellen Hofferber, Kelly Gillingwater, and two nephews, James Barnum and Kevin Anderson.
A memorial service with full military honors will be held on Wednesday, June 2 at 1:00PM at Messiah Lutheran Church in Vancouver, located at 905 NW 94th St., phone 574-7081.
Richard was a great contributor to a long list of beneficial organizations and in lieu of flowers; donations may be made to your favorite charity in his memory.
