Donald was a hardworking man who took pride in his ability to fix just about anything. A lifelong mechanic and machinist, he enjoyed working with his hands and had a natural talent for understanding how things worked. In 1989, Donald moved to Florida, where he continued his career as a mechanic with the North Port Sanitation Department.
Beyond his work, Donald had a zest for life and a love for people. He enjoyed traveling, karaoke, and, perhaps most of all, simply talking with others. He was affectionately known as “Cowboy Don” during his karaoke days, a fitting nickname for a man who was never afraid to have a good time and make a memory.
Donald was a devoted father and proud grandfather. He is survived by his four children, Sandra (Russ) Runge, Donna Hartlein, Donald Hartlein Jr., and Steven Hartlein.
He was a proud grandfather to Danielle (Jim) Gunville, Elizabeth (Kurt) McClellan, Randall (Marissa) Runge, Mitchell (Kaitlyn) Schaefer, Jamie (Mike) Hamil, Bobbi Jo Kagel, Samantha Kampe, Heather Hartlein, Donovan Hartlein, Haley Hartlein, Kaige Hartlein, Trinity Hartlein, Jesse Johannes, Aranda Johannes, and Karina Johannes, along with many great-grandchildren, extended family members, and dear friends who will cherish his memory.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Alice Hartlein; his beloved grandson, Nick Hartlein; and his wife, Beverly Hartlein.
Donald will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, mechanical know-how, love of karaoke and travel, and his gift for making connections with the people around him. His stories, laughter, and larger-than-life personality will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
