Dorothy Catherine Lohman, who celebrated her 100th birthday on October 18, 2025, passed away peacefully at her Manasota Key, Englewood, Florida home surrounded by loved ones on February 7, 2026, after suffering a heart attack, followed by a brief hospitalization and hospice home care.
Dorothy is survived by her children, Richard Lohman, Jr. and Lynn Lohman (Daniel Schmidt) of Englewood, Florida; her granddaughters: Melissa Lohman, Amanda Lohman-Yeu (David Yeu), Lesley Balamut, great granddaughters: Evelyn Yeu, Annie Yeu, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Perry Koval and Rose Pertak-Koval; sisters: Helen Cultra, Joanne Ring; brother, Perry Koval, Jr. and husband, Richard C. Lohman, Sr.
Dorothy was born in Cleveland, Ohio on October 18, 1925, to Perry Koval and Rose Pertak-Koval and was raised on their family farm in North Royalton, Ohio. She was very proud of her roots as a Midwest farmgirl and frequently regaled her family and friends with her fond memories of growing up as a hard-working helping hand and 4-H member, tending to their fields, orchard and farm animals. As a child of the Great Depression, she was proud of her family’s generosity and ability to shelter and feed many in need through those difficult years.
She graduated in 1943 from North Royalton High School, North Royalton, Ohio, where she served as class secretary and varsity cheerleader, and met her high school sweetheart and future husband, Richard (Dick) Lohman. Richard and his brothers served in the U.S. Army during WWII, and Richard took advantage of his home leave, prior to deployment to the Pacific theater, to schedule his wedding to Dorothy. They were married on January 5, 1944, and celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary a month before his passing in 2014.
Dorothy served as an Administrative Assistant with the Veterans Administration Hospital and the BF Goodrich Company, both in Brecksville, Ohio. Dorothy and Dick, after raising their family in North Royalton, Ohio, relocated to Englewood, Florida in 1974, following Dick’s retirement from his position as elementary principal with the North Royalton, Ohio School District. They knew the Sarasota, Florida County Superintendent of Schools and he encouraged them to fill vacant positions, Dick as Guidance Counselor and Dorothy as Library Assistant, with the Englewood, Florida Elementary School. Dorothy served in that capacity for 13 years and considered it by far her favorite and most rewarding work experience. There are many residents and former coworkers in the area who still remember and appreciate Mrs. Lohman’s kindness and commitment to that service role in the community.
As a person entirely devoted to her family, neighbors and friends, her community, her church and her faith, she used her many talents to support fundraising for mission work, console others, and celebrate significant life events for those she cared for. Dorothy was an active member of the Englewood Methodist Women, Dorcas Circle and Englewood Methodist Women’s Craft Workshop where she was an original member of the Raggedy Ann Doll group, designing, assembling and fabricating beautiful dolls that now sit in homes across the country. She will be remembered for the hundreds of hand-painted watercolor greeting cards sent over the years to many in her life. The Englewood Art Center is where she studied watercolor painting and became a prolific and talented watercolorist. She was an extremely creative individual, talented artist, crafter, seamstress and gardener. These activities were more than mere hobbies as this art exemplified to her an expression of love to others. Her legacy will remain through the loving example she set, for those who follow, in her humble and unassuming way. Dorothy spread her warmth of heart generously and will be missed by all whose lives she touched.
The family wishes to thank Affinity Care Hospice and Englewood Methodist Church for their care and compassion in her final days.
