Lorraine was born on July 21, 1946, in Queens, NY to Vincent and Mary Haviken. Lorraine was the youngest of 4 children and was preceded in death by her two brothers, Vincent and Robert.
Lorraine was dedicated to her successful career in education after she graduated from Adelphi University, achieving her Bachelor of Science and Master of Education. She attended Sorbonne University in Paris, France where she studied French literature. Lorraine also received a Professional Diploma in Education Administration from Long Island University. She commenced her teaching career in Hempstead public schools where she taught at both the intermediate and primary levels. Lorraine began working at Northside schools in Levittown, New York in 1986. Lorraine was the elementary school Principal for Northside where she flourished as an educational leader and after 16 years of dedicated service, she retired in 2002. Lorraine was very proud of her students, their education as well as running a diligent and successful educational environment. Once retired from Northside, Lorraine became Associate Professor at LIU Post where she continued her pursuit in educating future teachers until she moved to Venice, Florida to enjoy her retirement years.
2021 was a challenging year for Lorraine as she unfortunately lost her lifelong best friend to cancer, Diane Schmalz of West Islip, New York. We know that Lorraine is finally resting in peace. Lorraine is survived by her sister, Carol (Gordon) Dion, her sisters in law Marilyn Haviken and Francine Haviken, along with her nieces; Francine (Dion) McDermott, Denise (Dion) Quaco and Jennifer Dion; and nephews James Haviken and Robert Haviken; and her godson, Ryan Schmalz.
Lorraine’s family will host a Memorial service on March 10, 2022 from 3-5pm at Fairchild Sons Funeral Home, located at 1201 Franklin Avenue, Garden City, NY.
