Maryanna Young Daniel, age 92, of Englewood, Florida; formerly of Sarasota, Florida went up to our Lord, God in heaven on Monday, January 13, 2025. In life, some of her greatest joys were her family, church, teaching job, traveling, and quilting. You will be missed by so many.
Maryanna was born in Marion, Indiana on July 7, 1932 to Dr. and Mrs. James Young. She was the middle child with an older brother Joe and a younger brother John. Most of Maryanna’s dear friends, like Betty Austin and Barbara Doan, have passed on but she is survived by one of her best friends, Judith, and her husband Malcolm Helm of New-Castle -on-the-Tyne, England; more of a sister really. The Austins also felt like more of Mayanna’s family here and in England. She is also survived by her two children, seven wonderful grandchildren, six delightful great grandchildren, and two great, great grandchildren, who all live on Florida’s west coast. Although divorced, she always felt a close bond to all her in-laws of the extended Daniel clan of Doylestown, Ohio. Maryanna is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins in Indiana, Ohio, New York, and Georgia whom she loved dearly.
Maryanna was a very active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Sarasota for over 50 years. She loved serving in a variety of ways from ushering, serving refreshments, and folding newsletters to attending Bible Study Classes, Women’s Circles, and Thursday Knights. Maryanna absolutely adored the musical arrangements that Greg Chestnut so masterfully orchestrated. She cherished the pipe organ music before, during, and after each church service, always saying that it was like attending a concert.
After she graduated from the College of Wooster in Ohio, Maryanna then was employed as a teacher where she met her future husband. It was there she started her family and then moved to Sarasota in the 1960’s where she raised her children and continued teaching. Maryanna taught third grade at Brentwood Elementary School for almost 30 years. She loved teaching and was usually one of the first to arrive and last to leave. Her principal, Pat Corbin, created an atmosphere of professionalism, respect, and family. Again Maryanna made many lifelong friends there. She loved teaching the math facts, having the children make Christmas cookies & gingerbread houses, and of course reading aloud to her class daily after lunch & recess.
Maryanna loved all things British; teatime, the royal family, and the BBC tv to name a few. She would get such joy from watching “Are You Being Served” or “The Vicar of Dibly.” She traveled to England numerous times to visit her “British family” the Helms and Austins. In addition, Maryanna was very artistic; painting & sculpting in college; midlife was macramé and making jewelry; later years she got the quilting bug. It is impossible to know how many baby quilts and recovery pillows she made! Of course regular quilts for friends and family but her passion was quilting pillows to give to friends and strangers for support and comfort after surgery.
For all who knew Maryanna, you felt like family to her. 💗 We will miss our mother, grandmother, aunt, friend, colleague, teacher, quilter, volunteer …..you are in God’s house now.
🙏🏻Rest In Peace.☦️
