Stephen Michael Mottern, known as Steve to most and Stevie to a few, passed away on January 22, 2026, in Port Charlotte, Florida, at the age of 51. He was born on September 20, 1974, in Fairfax, Virginia.
Steve passed away following complications from a work injury after two years of treatment awaiting surgery to finally provide him some relief. He died peacefully at home in his sleep.
Steve was a wild one who lived life entirely on his own terms and never met a stranger. His larger-than-life personality, quick wit, and easy charm drew people in wherever he went. His smile was contagious, and he had a way of making people feel like old friends—even if they had just met him.
Steve’s love of sports started early, playing baseball from a young age working his way up to starting pitcher. His dad coaching him while his mom and sister cheer on proudly from the sidelines. His competitive nature carried into high school where he played football, a role that suited both his confidence and competitive spirit. He was also a lifelong NFL fan, loyal to the Washington Redskins—and to Steve, they will always be the Redskins.
He loved the outdoors, especially fishing and hunting. Along with this, his teenage years were lived loud and full of stories—cruising around in his Bronco with the top off and the music turned up, always surrounded by friends. He wasn’t afraid to push the limits, including one legendary snowstorm adventure involving a truck, a tube, and a few best buddies—you know who you are. These moments became the kind of stories that only get better with time.
Steve discovered his passion for wood-shop in high school, which naturally led to a lifelong career as a carpenter specializing in home improvements. He took pride in his craftsmanship and the work of his hands. He also took pride in himself—often asking, “How’s my hair?”—and liked to look good no matter what he was doing. That mix of confidence, humor, warmth, and just enough fire to keep things interesting was pure Steve.
In his later years, Steve settled into life in Florida, finding a rhythm that suited him. While he never lost his edge or his sense of fun, he embraced a slower pace and the importance of family, friendship, and being present in the moment.
Steve was the beloved son of Diane Browder and Stephen Clyde Mottern, who preceded him in death in December 2024. He is survived by his mother, Diane, his sister, Shelley Marie Mottern; the love of his life, Shannon Thompson; and his children, Stephen Matthew Mottern, Michael Tucker Mottern, Abigail Christine Mottern, and Cash Ryan Mottern, who were the center of his world.
A celebration of Steve’s life will be held on February 21, 2026 at 635 E. Marion Avenue, Punta Gorda, Florida 33950. A gathering will begin at 1:00 PM, with services starting at 2:00 PM. Following the service, family and friends are invited to Leroy’s Southern Kitchen and Bar in Punta Gorda to continue sharing memories and stories of Steve.
A celebration of life in Virginia is currently in the planning stages and will be announced at a later date.
He lived loud, loved hard, and left behind stories that will be told with laughter for years to come. He lived life his way—and those who knew him are better for it.
