Tom L. Edgar Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 31, at Gulf Pines Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children or Suncoast Humane Society.

Thomas LeRoy Edgar, Jr., known to family and friends as Tom, was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on September 19, 1932. He passed away in July 2026, following the death of his beloved wife, Anne Williams Edgar, on June 11, 2026.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Williams Edgar; his parents, Georga and LeRoy Edgar; his sister, Sharon Kay Van Dyke, and her husband, Thomas Van Dyke; and their beloved dogs, Monte, Missy, Princess, Tyler, and Sammie Jo.

He is survived by his daughter, Julie Edgar, and her partner, Mickey Jorgensen, of Rotonda West, Florida; his nephew, Jeff Van Dyke, and his wife, Heather, of Shawnee Mission, Kansas; and his niece, Jennifer Winters, of Branson, Missouri.

Tom was a cross-country athlete in high school and graduated from Shawnee Mission High School in 1950. He attended Baker University in Baldwin, Kansas, for two years before transferring to the University of Colorado in Boulder, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business in 1954.

Shortly after graduation, Tom entered the U.S. Army. He served most of his military deployment in France and was honorably discharged in 1956.

Upon returning to Kansas City, Tom joined his father, Roy, in the family business, Beck Planet, helping build the company into a regional wholesale office and stationery supply business based in downtown Kansas City. The family eventually opened a retail store at Ward Parkway Shopping Mall. The company was later purchased by Waterman Pens, which, sadly, filed for bankruptcy not long after the acquisition. Tom went on to manage Faust Wine & Spirits in Leawood, Kansas, until his retirement.

In 1957, Tom was introduced to his future wife through an arranged date set up by his mother, Georga, and Esther Bowman. Tom and Anne were married on September 14, 1957, beginning a marriage filled with love, laughter, family, and nearly 69 years together.

After seven years of trying and beginning the adoption process, Tom and Anne were blessed with the arrival of their only child, Julie Ann, on December 21, 1963.

Tom was devoted to his daughter and made sure she was involved in every sport and activity she loved. Golf tournaments and basketball games filled countless weeks, and Tom was always there to cheer her on, no matter the weather, the distance, or the cost.

Tom was incredibly proud of his involvement as a Mason, Shriner, and Jester. He served for five years on the Ararat Divan and was elected Impresario and Director of Jester Court #54 in Kansas City, Missouri.

After retiring in 1996, Tom and Anne moved to Rotonda West, Florida, their dream destination. After a brief stint at K-Mart, Tom found what became his true calling as one of the starters at Riverwood Golf & Country Club. He quickly became a favorite among members and guests, even when occasionally butchering their names over the public-address system.

Tom loved the game of golf, although his goal of lowering his handicap was never quite achieved, in part because of the infamous "Tom Edgar Holes." Regardless, golf gave Tom countless friendships, wonderful memories, and precious time with his daughter, Julie. Tom was also responsible for helping Julie secure her interview with Keith Struble and Plantation, a connection that would prove to be a winning match.

Tom will be remembered for treating all the women in his life like queens and princesses, for his incredible kindness, unwavering loyalty to his friends, and undeniable work ethic. He loved the Florida sunshine, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Kansas City Royals, the University of Colorado, and the University of Iowa. He enjoyed watching girls' softball and basketball, grilling, making salads and sandwiches, sharing a beer or a scotch, and, of course, never missing an opportunity to watch Angie Dickinson.

Tom lived a life filled with family, friendship, service, laughter, and love. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, a loyal friend, and a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Brookdale Rotonda and Tidewell Hospice for the compassionate care and support they provide for both Anne & Tom in their final year.
