Alex was born on April 6 1937 in Mashad, Iran and attended primary school in Tehran. At that point Alex’s strongest desire was to follow in the footsteps of his father and become a Civil Engineer. So he immigrated to the United States to study at the University of Arizona where he received his Bachelor’s of Science degree. While in Tucson he and his wife Joan started a family. Eventually Alex moved to Seattle with his young family to study at the University of Washington where he received his Master’s of Science degree. The family moved to Ventura, where Alex and Joan have lived since 1964.
Alex worked for the Ventura County Flood Control District for 35 years. Over the course of his career he was instrumental in bringing numerous important projects to the County of Ventura including the Revlon and Beardsley projects that protect agricultural lands in the Oxnard Plain. Alex’s most important legacy may be the young engineers he mentored throughout his long career.
Music, travel, history, wine, and woodworking were all passions that Alex enjoyed throughout his busy life. But it was time spent with family and friends that he most enjoyed. Alex is survived by his wife of 54 years, Joan; children, Tania Litwiler of Santa Ynez, Lisa Sturtevant of Escondido and Peter Sheydayi of Ventura; brother, Yury Sheydayi of Tempe, Arizona; and eight grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Friday August 15, at Charles Carroll Mortuary, 15 Teloma Drive, Ventura. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Alex’s name to the Lustgarten Foundation for pancreatic cancer research at www.lustgarten.org/.
Arrangements under the direction of Charles Carroll Funeral Home, Ventura, CA.
